Surupa Gupta, associate professor of political science and international affairs, spoke at a panel titled “Trade Policy Now and Beyond the Nairobi Ministerial” at the 11th symposium on International Trade at the Washington College of Law at American University. This was the first of three panels that had participants from U.S. and Brazilian governments, academia, private sector and think tanks.
Gray Moderates Panel on Knowledge-Centered Support
Edward Gray, systems integration and support specialist in UMW’s IT Support Services, moderated a panel discussion on Knowledge-Centered Support on Thursday, Oct. 22. The discussion was presented by the itSMF USA Higher Education Community of Interest as a follow-up to a presentation hosted by Gray in July. Gray has been at UMW for more than 15 years, serving in various IT roles. He earned a master of science degree in Management Information Systems from UMW in 2010. He was a participant in the inaugural cohort of Leadership UMW. He has also earned several technical and management best practice certifications. He also serves on the Board of the Higher Education Community of Interest.

Srivastava Organizes Sixth Global Management Conference
Mukesh Srivastava, professor of management information systems, organized the sixth International Conference of the Association of Global Management Studies at the Lerner Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY on June 10 and 11, 2015. The theme of the conference is “Global Management and Innovation across Businesses.”
This conference continues to provide a platform to discuss challenges pertaining to the contemporary issues in global management. It also fosters an environment for multidisciplinary global research involved in the development of theoretical and practice knowledge of all business and related fields by researchers, educators, developers and practitioners.
Global Participation of Scholars
This year, 91 papers were submitted and 30 were selected for presentation at the conference and publications in the ICAGMS 2015 Proceedings; selected quality papers are slated to be published in the International Journal of Global Management Studies or International Journal of Global Management Studies Professional.
Academics from fourteen countries including Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE, UK, U.S.A. and Vietnam presented their scholarly research work on global management study. This year’s keynote address was delivered by Professor Noel Capon, R. C. Kopf Professor of International Marketing, Columbia Business School, Columbia University, New York on Managing Global Accounts, which was well received by the audience.

What was your favorite sport growing up? Briefly describe your favorite memory playing or watching it. Soccer hands down. My favorite memory of playing soccer is not from the field per se, but from the parking lot of a Manchester United vs. Real Madrid summer exhibition game in Philadelphia is 2003. There was a penalty kick simulation in the parking lot and I put the ball in the upper 90. All of these British guys surrounded me and chanted Scholesey (for Paul Scholes), which is fitting since I’m a ginger just like Paul Scholes.
Where is your favorite place around town to get a bite to eat? Foode or Carl’s.
If you could pick one super power to have, what would it be and why? A super-footballer with the speed of Theo Walcott, the sublime dribbling skills of Messi, the free-kick taking ability of Beckham, and the tenacity of Wayne Rooney.
Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why? Soccer practice? Just kidding. Football. I grew up watching the NFL and college football.
If you were a Head Coach and could pick three words to motivate your team and hang in their locker room which words would you choose? Persistence, Determination, Teamwork.
What does a great leader look like to you? A great leader understands him/herself and his/her employees. A great leader models the way.
What is a must read for UMW Student-Athletes? As a soccer fan, I would have to suggest Soccernomics by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski.
What is the best advice you have ever heard given to a college graduate? Do what you love to do and the money will follow.
Finally, if you were hanging out on Ball Circle picking the brains of four professional/famous athletes (living or deceased), who would they be? George Best (Manchester United footballer), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United footballer), Lionel Messi (Barcelona footballer), and Eden Hazard (Chelsea footballer).

Nabil Al-Tikriti Monitors Belarus Presidential Election
From Oct. 6-13, Dr. Nabil Al-Tikriti, associate professor of Middle Eastern history, served as an election monitor for the Belarus presidential election. Joining more than 30 other Americans in the U.S. delegation, Al-Tikriti worked as an OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) and STO (Short Term Observer) in the capital city, Minsk. His observation partner was a Czech national and former U.N.D.P. staff member; the team’s interpreter was a college professor of English; and the team’s driver was a cardiac surgeon. Farnsworth and O’Brien Co-author Virginia Politics Article
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, and Ellen O’Brien, a senior political science major at UMW and a research associate at the center, are coauthors of an article reviewing the 2015 campaigns for the Senate of Virginia. The article appeared in the October 2015 issue of Fredericksburg Regional Business magazine.
Librarians Participate in MARAC Conference
Suzanne Huffman, digital resources librarian, and Katherine Perdue, assistant systems librarian, presented at the recent Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) in Roanoke. Their session, The Interactive Experience: Exploring Technologies for Creating Touchscreen Exhibits, focused on their experiences in creating and managing interactive exhibits, describing useful tools, open-source products, implementation strategies and assessment techniques. Carolyn Parsons, university archivist, served on the conference’s Program Committee.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) promotes communication and learning among professionals interested in archives, current digital initiatives and preservation of historic and cultural resources.
Good Presents on Founding Fathers
Cassandra Good, associate editor of the Papers of James Monroe, presented a paper at the Society for United States Intellectual History in Washington D.C. on Oct. 17. The paper was titled “Making the Historical Personal: The Founding Fathers, Gender, and the Cultural Turn.”

Farnsworth Moderates Senate of Virginia Debate
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently moderated a debate for the 36th District of the Senate of Virginia. Del. Scott Surovell (D) and Dumfries Mayor Jerry Foreman (R) are competing in the district, which includes portions of Stafford, Prince William and Fairfax counties. The incumbent senator, Toddy Puller (D), is retiring after 24 years of service in the state Senate and House of Delegates. She is a graduate of Mary Washington College.
