Janet Cropp
Janet Cropp, assistant dean of advising services, was awarded a certificate from the Advising Business Majors Commission of NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) for successful completion of the Professional Development Recognition Program. She received the certificate at the annual NACADA conference held in Orlando, Fla., in October.
UMW Staff Present at MABUG Conference
Two UMW staff members presented sessions at the Mid-Atlantic Banner Users Group (MABUG) conference at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and a third staff member facilitated a session at the meeting, which was held in October in Wilmington, N.C.
Jane Cariker, director of advancement IT services, presented the session “Loading Parent Records from Student Information into Advancement.” Cariker discussed the process that creates parent records in Banner and outlined the benefits it has provided in establishing both immediate and personal communication with new UMW parents.
Edward Gray, systems integration specialist, presented the session “Automating Account Propagation in a Microsoft Environment.” Gray shared UMW’s experiences and insights in leveraging Banner data with Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007.
Linda Thornton, associate director of business systems analysis, facilitated the “Birds of a Feather” session on Virginia’s eVA Vendor Data Standards and the impact on Virginia Banner universities.
Other UMW attendees included Rita Dunston, registrar; Ben Kjar, associate director of enterprise applications services; Linda Lovin, applications developer; and John Symonds, applications database administrator.
UMW hosted the 2008 conference of MABUG, which is an association of colleges and universities in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
Chris Kilmartin
Chris Kilmartin, professor of psychology, was named a divisional Researcher of the Year at the annual conference of the American Psychological Association (APA) held recently in San Diego, Calif. The award was given by the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, Division 51. This honor recognizes outstanding published research concerning males and masculinity. Kilmartin had a commentary published in The Free Lance-Star in November. The piece was titled “Acquaintance Rape: The Common Story and the Real Story.”
Steve Watkins
“The Ledger” newspaper in Lakeland, Fla., is asking children to finish a Thanksgiving short story written by Professor Steve Watkins (http://www.theledger.com/article/20101116/NEWS/11165019/1326?p=1&tc=pg). The newspaper will publish the top three entries from children in grades 2-8. Professor Watkins, the award-winning author of “Down Sand Mountain,” grew up in the Brewster and Fort Meade areas of Florida. His next young adult book, “What Comes After,” is due out soon.
Craig Naylor
The Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music is presenting the Midwest premiere of “our voices, for now, sustained,” composed by Craig Naylor. Naylor, dubbed a modern classical composer, wrote the composition based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry of Claudia Emerson, an Arrington distinguished chair in poetry and professor of English at UMW. Naylor has also composed such famous pieces as the soundtrack for the mountain climbing scenes in the IMAX film “To the Limit” and “On the Head of a Pin.”

Adrienne Brovero
Led by coach Adrienne Brovero, UMW’s debate team racked up a litany of awards at the recent Liberty University debate tournament including the top three speakers in the varsity division. In addition, the two-person tandem of Patrick McCleary and Colin McElhinny reached the finals, placing second after a close debate with Wake Forest University.
The UMW debate team has been in action every weekend since September and will continue through the end of March at the national championships. UMW will host an intercollegiate tournament on campus January 4-6, 2011 that is open for visitors.

Hegmann Named to Hall of Fame
Ed Hegmann, the Eagles’ athletic director and long-time women’s tennis coach will be inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame on the campus of the College of William & Mary on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Twice named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year, Hegmann began his distinguished career at the University of Mary Washington in 1976, serving as both women’s tennis coach and director of athletics. A native of Pittsburgh, Hegmann had considered a professional baseball career while an undergraduate at Bucknell University, then switched his focus to tennis as a graduate student. He earned an M.S. from Springfield College and an Ed.D. from Temple University.
As UMW’s tennis coach from 1976 to 1999, Hegmann guided his teams to three national championships in 1982, 1988 and 1991, and nine straight conference championships from 1991-99. He coached 18 All-Americans and 10 conference players of the year, as well as 1991 Division III Senior Player of the Year Christy Copper. As athletic director, he developed UMW’s program from six women’s varsity sports to 23 men’s and women’s teams, and was honored as the NACDA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year in 2010.
UMW Design Team Selected to Help Service Dogs Program
Graphic Designers Maria Christina Schultz and AJ Newell have been selected to design promotional materials for the Saint Francis Service Dogs program. The service dogs help people with physical disabilities become more self-sufficient by performing physical tasks and providing emotional support for their human partners. Schultz and Newell were chosen in a statewide contest sponsored by Worth Higgins & Associates. The designers plan to create a Service Dog Album which will help raise awareness and funds for the construction of a training center and kennels in Roanoke, Virginia.
