UMW Study Abroad Bequeathed $1 Million; http://fredericksburg.patch.com
A 1972 alumna of the University of Mary Washington has made a $1 million bequest to encourage and support UMW students seeking to study abroad. The donor, who asked to remain anonymous, wishes to enhance opportunities and resources for international education, while increasing the percentage of undergraduate students who study abroad or participate in international learning experiences.

Thousands of visitors descended upon the campus of the University of Mary Washington yesterday for the 21st annual Multicultural Festival. The fair featured performances representing 15 international cultures, along with crafts, food and educational entertainment for the kiddies. It was the first time the Cobblestone Children’s Museum organization unveiled their traveling magnet exhibit. Fredericksburg Patch was on hand and returned with a few photographs from the festivities.

Claudia Emerson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and English professor at the University of Mary Washington, has been selected to receive a prestigious fellowship awarded by the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.

Claudia Emerson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and English professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, will be inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Writers during its biennial meeting to be held during the Conference on Southern Literature this week.

Professor Chad Murphy, faculty sponsor of the University of Mary Washington map-drawing team that drew state redistricting maps, will be the speaker for the general meeting of the Fredericksburg PC Users Group on Thursday.

Elizabeth Bradley, a University of Mary Washington junior who attended Mountain View High School in Stafford County, stands with her award-winning painting, ‘Over the Edge.’ Bradley’s work won the Melchers Gray Purchase Award at the college’s annual Student Art Exhibition, which runs through April 17 at the duPont Gallery. Another UMW student from Stafford County, senior Tenee Hart, received the Emil Schnellock Award in Painting for ‘The Goats.’ Senior Gina Dargan of Fredericksburg took the Department Award for Textile Design for ‘Untitled: I Love Her Too.’ Among students receiving honorable mention awards were senior Lauren Horton of Dahlgren for digital media, junior Ashleigh Buyers of Stafford for mixed media, and Hart for photography.
