Wanna lose a few pounds and gain a new perspective? Come to Weight Watchers at Work.

We are starting a new session next week (Oct. 17), and we need YOU! This is a perfect time to jump in. It is confidential and non-threatening. You will find a collegial, friendly, funny and supportive group of people – and I guarantee it will change your outlook (not to mention your looks!).

I have been a part of Weight Watchers at Work since its inception several years ago. It has become such a part of my life, I can’t imagine not having it. However, if we don’t get 20 sign-ups by next week, Weight Watchers will discontinue our At Work program. That would be devastating to many of us, who have started looking forward to our Wednesday noon sessions. No – we do not always eagerly anticipate the standing-on-the-scales part. We yearn for the camaraderie. Through WW at Work, I have gotten to know colleagues that I never would have had the pleasure of meeting. On this weight loss journey, we have shared victories and disappointments, as well as tons of lessons and tips and laughs. When I return to the office, I feel comfortable going to these folks with questions or concerns about University business.

And the bonus is that I have kept my weight in check! It’s a no-brainer. We get a discounted rate plus access to eTools, which enhances and simplifies the whole program. Plus, because the University’s winter break falls during the next session, we get additional weeks for free. And the best news of all is that full-time employees are reimbursed for half the cost of the program.

The holidays are approaching and so are those added pounds – SEVEN on average! Come join us so that we will begin enjoying your company while seeing less of you!

Eagle Dining is offering a new “Smoke House” menu every Wednesday for lunch in the Faculty and Staff Dining Room at Seacobeck. We’ll be offering delicious dishes like Pulled Barbecued Pork, Beef Brisket, Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese….all slow-smoked to perfection by our chefs. Smoke House Wednesdays will begin on October 17. Lunch is served 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Please join us!

PARKING LOTS TO BE PAVED DURING FALL BREAK

Saturday, October 13 – Tuesday, October 16.  Areas to be impacted will be:

• All roads from back gates at Sunken Road to Lee Circle; including road to Woodard to point opposite Willard that was paved last year.
• Lots next to Monroe/Willard (lots 15 and 16).

Individuals may use campus walk to access Willard, Woodard, Monroe, Lee and Virginia.

Paving questions may be directed to Richard Blair.

eVA FIVE (5) DAY RULE

eVA purchase orders should be issued prior to contractors performing any work.  However, should the agency find it necessary to issue any eVA confirming orders, the confirming orders must be placed in eVA within five (5) business days after directing the contractor to proceed.

VCE ORDERS – CRITICAL ALERT

On Non-Catalog Orders to VCE you must select the VCE vendor from the Supplier Search list.  Do Not use the ad hoc vendor feature to enter VCE vendor information.  When copying an older Requisition, be sure that you select VCE on the Supplier Search in case you had ad hoc’d VCE on the previous requisition.

PEPSI SCHOLARSHIP

By meeting 100% on-time course material adoption dates for Fall 2012, the Departments of Math & Theater and Dance won Pepsi textbook scholarships totaling $2,000.

The Stafford Campus Scholarship departments will be selected Spring 2013.

NATIONAL STUDENT DAY

UMW joined with 1500 campuses across America to participate in National Student Day and demonstrated social responsibility by packaging 10,000 meals to help Stop Hunger Now!

DESKTOP PRINTER SURVEY

UMW will conduct a print strategy study in FY13.  Representatives from Pitney Bowes will be on campus this week to conduct a survey of desktop copiers.

In the past two weeks, UMW students, faculty and staff have shown their generosity through Day of Service activities and National Student Day.

When Governor Bob McDonnell declared September 29, 2012 to be the “Day of Service in Virginia,” the UMW Staff Advisory Council (S.A.C.) moved into action. The S.A.C. Eagles in Service quickly replaced their school supply drive boxes with Day of Service food donation boxes and then went to work soliciting donations to fight hunger in Virginia.

When September 29 arrived, the group delivered 300 pounds of food to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. Priscilla Sullivan, S.A.C. activities chair,  said she is very grateful to each UMW employee who donated to this crucial effort. The next donation campaign will kick off at the employee luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, more than 50 student volunteers gathered in Lee Hall for UMW’s Stop Hunger Now event. The students packaged 10,000 meals for children and families from impoverished areas who have been affected by natural disasters. The Center for Honor, Leadership and Service and the UMW Bookstore partnered to bring the event to UMW as part of National Student Day,  a day that celebrates the volunteer work of students nationwide.

The University Health Center and Department of Emergency Management and Safety are hosting flu clinics on the following days:

Flu shots will be available for students, faculty and staff FREE of charge.

Anyone with questions regarding the flu clinic may contact the Health Center at 654-1040.

Free flu shots are also available at specified locations for state employees and their covered family members that are enrolled in COVA Care and COVA HDHP health plans.  For more information and a list of participating pharmacies, go to http://www.dhrm.virginia.gov/hbenefits/flushotinformation.html   Kaiser Permanente HMO plan members have access to free flu shots at participating Kaiser medical centers.
