Call for Program Proposals for 2012 Women’s History Month Celebration

Faculty, staff and students are invited to submit program proposals for consideration and inclusion in the annual UMW Women’s History Month Celebration. Program proposals are due by December 16, 2011 and the sponsors will be notified promptly. The theme for the 2012 celebration is “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment.” Preference will be given to programs and events relating to this theme. Program proposal forms may be obtained from the James Farmer Multicultural Center in Lee Hall, room 211 or click here. UMW Gameday: Rise of Eagle Nation

This Saturday, come to the UMW basketball double-header as the women’s and men’s basketball teams take on Frostburg State. Prior to the games, the teams will hold a special meet-and-greet for kids. Attendees will receive free t-shirts and mini-basketballs.

When: Saturday, Dec. 3
Where: The Anderson Center
Meet-and-Greet: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Games: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Special Gift to All UMW Faculty and Staff

In celebration of the season, the Museum Shop at Gari Melchers Home and Studio extends to all UMW faculty and staff a 25% discount on  purchases made Thursday and Friday, December 8th and 9th. It’s our way of saying thank you to everyone for their help and support throughout the year.

We have a wonderful selection of books this season, with new titles such as  Rin Tin Tin, his biography!  Our art supply section is stocked with items guaranteed to inspire any artist – Sennilier pastels & oils from France &  Fabriano papers from Italy.  There are unique gift items and trinkets to trim your tree.  (Read our shop blog and catch the latest news! museumshop1.)

The Museum Shop has opened a site exclusively for Gari Melchers related items: MelchersMuseumShop. Prints, cards, books and gift items with distinctive Melchers images reproduced can be found on this site.

The Melchers Museum Shop is  on the grounds of Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, which is located across the Route 1 bridge at 224 Washington Street, Falmouth.  The Shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All UMW employees may tour the museum at no charge. UMW students and all students 18 and under visit free.  Adult admission is $10, and includes the introductory film, tour of the home, artist’s studio and three galleries of artwork.  Tours are offered 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Wednesdays, when the museum is closed to the public.

There is a systems of walking trails on the property which may be accessed when the museum is open. (Map of walking trails & estate).

Gari Melchers Home and Studio to Host Holiday Tours

Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will offer daily “Holidays with the Melchers” 30-minute guided tours of the artfully decorated Georgian house throughout December. The museum is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours run on the hour, starting at 10:30 a.m. and are included in the regular admission price of $10 for adults. Students 18 years old and younger are admitted free with an accompanying, paying adult, limit two. Current UMW faculty, staff and students are admitted free.

The tour will showcase imaginative decorations and vignettes that interpret life at the Melchers’ cherished Falmouth country retreat. All exterior decorations are provided courtesy of the Rappahannock Valley Garden Club.

The museum gift shop, decked out for the season, will offer a wide selection of books, advent calendars, art supplies and gift items.

Holiday Events at JMM this Saturday, December 3

Join the James Monroe Museum this Saturday to get in the holiday mood!

Tickets are still available for “Deck the Halls,” the annual holiday decorating presentation by Jan Williams, which will be held in Dodd Auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. This program has hundreds of loyal fans and will give you great ideas on how to decorate your home for the season! Tickets are $22 for UMW faculty and staff and include a breakfast of seasonal breads, pastries, coffee and tea. Call x1123 or e-mail auphaus@umw.edu to purchase.

On Saturday afternoon, visit the museum (at 908 Charles Street) for our free holiday Open House from 4 to 6 p.m., before the downtown Holiday Parade. We’ll have hot cider and cookies, and visitors will see the special exhibit “A Monroe Christmas,” which shows how the holidays were celebrated during Monroe’s time.

An added bonus is that a jazz ensemble from the Quantico Marine Corps Band will give a free performance of seasonal tunes in our courtyard at 4 p.m.!
