On June 30, 2011, UMW received a gift of more than $90,000 from the estate of John Allison Gow of Houston, Tex. Mr. Gow worked in theater for more than 30 years, was a well-respected member of the Houston theatrical community, and served as a mentor to many aspiring students. During his lifetime, Mr. Gow was a regular contributor to the UMW Keith Belli Memorial Scholarship originally established in 1997 as tribute to Professor Belli’s five years of service to Mary Washington. The Belli scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding theater students.   This gift announcement is from the Office of Advancement and University Relations.

Congratulations to Dena Gray, Senior Administrative Assistant in Student Life, who has been selected as an Excellent Eagle Employee by the Staff Advisory Council. To thank you for such a wonderful job, Dena will have a reserved parking spot of her choosing through Friday, July 29th.

Here is what one of Dena’s co-workers said about her:

“She is always the first in the office and the last to leave. She jumps in and helps as needed and is great with concerned families and students. She truly deserves to be able to park a little closer since we lost our parking lot in Marye House due to the construction in Randolph and Mason.”

George Farrar, our Associate Vice President for University Relations and Communications, has retired as of June 30. In his two years with UMW, George helped manage our media relations during challenging times. The press received for UMW’s Freedom Rides celebration garnered more national attention in new and traditional media than any event here of recent memory. He leaves having overseen the shaping of the future UMW brand, the development of the new web site, and the upcoming inauguration. It is important to mention in this space that this EagleEye newsletter was George’s brainchild. George is a good, kind, and ethical man whose leadership will be missed, and professionalism always admired. We’ll miss you, George, and wish you all the best!
