Herbert Gintis, Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, will be at UMW on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 18-19.  Gintis is external professor at the Santa Fe Institute and professor of economics at Central European University (Budapest) where he heads a multidisciplinary research project, “The Social and Mental Dynamics of Cooperation.”  He was professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts from 1976 to 2002.  In addition, he is the author of Game Theory Evolving and The Bounds of Reason; and a coauthor of Schooling in Capitalist America, Foundations of Human Sociality, Moral Sentiments and Material Interests and, forthcoming, A Cooperative Species.  He is an editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and of Games.

All proceeds benefit Side-Out, which in turn awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families. The Museum Shop at Gari Melchers Home and Studio offers 20% discount on all purchases to UMW faculty, staff and students.  The Museum Shop offers a selection of Melchers branded items ( postcards, prints, mugs and magnets) as well as  unique home decor pieces.  We  offer a fine selection of books, with hard-to-find titles  in categories such as  art, history, biography, gardens and  photography.  Our art supply section is growing.  We  now carry M Graham paints, a very unique, hand crafted brand based on historic formulas and dedicated to using non-toxic materials.

Remember, too, that admission to the Gari Melchers Home and Studio is free to staff, faculty and students.  Museum hours are 10 a.m – 5 p.m. Closed Wednesdays.

On Saturday, October 16, 2010 the Office of Admissions will be holding the first Discovery Day of the fall semester. The latest registration numbers indicate that over 300 prospective students and about 1000 total visitors will join us on campus on Saturday!
The Discovery Day schedule includes events and activities for our visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., although we expect our guests to begin arriving on campus earlier in the morning. Expect to see increased foot traffic on campus and a large amount of visitors in the campus dining facilities. Our visitors have been instructed to park in the parking garage, but with the amount of people we expect to attend they will most likely need to seek other parking options throughout campus and on neighboring side streets. Hopefully this information will allow you to plan accordingly for Saturday. Please welcome visitors to the University of Mary Washington.

Who Can Attend: Open to the public

Content: Fall is a great time for planting!  Bring whatever you have to share: perennials, saplings, bulbs, even gardening supplies you no longer use.  Please label all plants with a common name.  Bring your plants at 9 a.m. and browse around. The exchange will start promptly at 10 o’clock.  Following the exchange, join us as we plant native species to restore the riparian buffer at Woodard Campus Center.  Learn about this important natural filter and how you affect your watershed.
