Women’s Ultimate Team Embodies Club Sport Spirit

On a warm evening in mid-May, 18 dedicated athletes showed up at the University of Mary Washington’s recreational field to spin, leap and fly. Their academic year was already over, but several members of the Mary Washington women’s Ultimate Frisbee team came here after working all day. Others returned just to fit in these last few practices before heading to the airport. Their destination? The D-III College Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was the team’s first trip to nationals since 2019, after two pandemic-constrained seasons filled with masked practices and intermittent competition. But this season was different. These Mary Washington women seemed almost unstoppable, with a spirited mix of rookies and veterans, and an amazing class of seniors. They taught and encouraged one another, creating a chemistry that made their defense a wall and their offense just plain scary. The team won every game in its conference tournament to seal the nationals bid. Read more.

UMW Women’s Rugby Team Headed to Nationals

The University of Mary Washington women’s rugby team will soon cap off a highly successful 2013-2014 season by competing in the USA Rugby National Championship at Penn State University on April 26 and 27. The UMW women's rugby team is headed to the national championships. The Eagles received an automatic bid to nationals after their Division II Women’s Capital Collegiate Rugby Conference win in November. Under the leadership of coaches Kris Kabza and Bill Lucas, this marks the team’s eighth appearance at the event, more than any other Division II women’s rugby team in the country. UMW will enter the Round of 16 at the national championships, with a chance to advance to the Round of 4 at Stanford University in May. At Penn State, UMW will face the Kent State University on Saturday, April 26 and Appalachian State or American University on Sunday, April 27. The team has a long history of success before the recent establishment of the Capital Conference. Between 1998 and 2012, UMW finished in first place 13 times and finished second twice in the Virginia Rugby Union Division II league. From 1998 to 2010, UMW won five championships in the Mid-Atlantic Territorial Championships. Only one other team comes close with four wins. UMW women’s rugby, a club sport since 1985, competes in both the spring and fall. For more information about the team, visit

UMW Rugby Players Spend Weekend in Service

For members of the University of Mary Washington club rugby team, Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend was all about community service. The players painted porches, spread mulch and cleaned up properties for Empowerhouse, formerly known as the Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence. The team plans for another service day in April. “UMW Rugby Team Sponsors Annual Service Project” in The Free Lance-Star on Saturday, Jan. 19 Photos by Kimmie Barkley ’14
