“The Ledger” newspaper in Lakeland, Fla., is asking children to finish a Thanksgiving short story written by Professor Steve Watkins (http://www.theledger.com/article/20101116/NEWS/11165019/1326?p=1&tc=pg). The newspaper will publish the top three entries from children in grades 2-8. Professor Watkins, the award-winning author of “Down Sand Mountain,” grew up in the Brewster and Fort Meade areas of Florida. His next young adult book, “What Comes After,” is due out soon.
The Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music is presenting the Midwest premiere of “our voices, for now, sustained,” composed by Craig Naylor. Naylor, dubbed a modern classical composer, wrote the composition based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry of Claudia Emerson, an Arrington distinguished chair in poetry and professor of English at UMW. Naylor has also composed such famous pieces as the soundtrack for the mountain climbing scenes in the IMAX film “To the Limit” and “On the Head of a Pin.”

Led by coach Adrienne Brovero, UMW’s debate team racked up a litany of awards at the recent Liberty University debate tournament including the top three speakers in the varsity division. In addition, the two-person tandem of Patrick McCleary and Colin McElhinny reached the finals, placing second after a close debate with Wake Forest University.
The UMW debate team has been in action every weekend since September and will continue through the end of March at the national championships. UMW will host an intercollegiate tournament on campus January 4-6, 2011 that is open for visitors.

Jason C. James, assistant professor of anthropology, will have an article, “Coming to Terms through Cinema: The Lives of Others in Germany’s Cultural Landscape of Memory,” published in the fall/winter 2010 issue of the Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe.
