Farnsworth and Noah Gardner ’18 Present Research at National Conference
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of UMW’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, and Noah Gardner, a 2018 graduate of Mary Washington and a former research associate at the Center, were co-authors of a research paper, “Late Night with Donald Trump: Political Humor and America’s Top Comedy Target,” recently presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association. Gardner graduated from UMW last year with Distinction and with Departmental Honors in Political Science after completing an honors project examining U.S. public opinion.

UMW to Host Four District Debates Starting Next Week
The University of Mary Washington will host four debates in the coming weeks between candidates running this November for Fredericksburg-area seats in the Senate of Virginia and the Commonwealth’s House of Delegates.
The first, the 28th District Senate Debate, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5, inside University Hall at UMW’s Stafford Campus, 121 University Boulevard.
Two area House race debates will follow. The 28th District House Debate on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and the 88th District House Debate on Friday, Sept. 20, will take place on UMW’s Fredericksburg campus in Lee Hall, Room 411. On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the 17th District Senate Debate will be held in Monroe Hall, Room 346, also on the Fredericksburg Campus.
All four debates will begin at 7 p.m.
Farnsworth Lectures at Scouting’s World Jamboree

Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently presented a lecture, “Made-up News and Democratic Discourse,” at Scouting’s World Jamboree near Beckley, WV. The international jamboree is held once every four years and brings tens of thousands of scouts together to promote international understanding.

Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently presented a lecture, “How Governments and Media Companies Struggle with Fake News,” at the Break the Fake Hackathon, a project of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative and U.S. Department of State. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Professor Farnsworth, who was in Malaysia this summer as a Fulbright Specialist at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur, also judged the hackathon entries, projects designed to assist in the identification of fake news or to reduce its dissemination.
