Sustainability Day at UMW

Curious about sustainability? Join local experts and learn about recycling, composting, plastics in the environment, use of native grasses, stormwater effects and proper planting at Sustainability Day at UMW on Saturday, October 8. The activities will run from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Jefferson Square and are free and open to the public.

Bring your questions and unidentified pests to the Plant and Insect Clinic offered by Master Gardeners and the Stafford County Extension agent.

At 10:30 a.m., UMW staff will demonstrate dividing perennials, spring flowering bulbs and proper tree planting, followed by a presentation by  volunteers from Tree Fredericksburg at noon.

Sponsors include the University of Mary Washington, Friends of the Rappahannock, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Rappahannock Group Sierra Club, Master Gardener Association of the Central Rappahannock Area, the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board and the UMW Ecology Club.

Recyclemania Off to a Strong Start

Recyclemania kicked off at UMW and on other university campuses across the country February 7, and UMW students, staff and offices recycled a whopping 6,993 pounds of materials during the first week of the annual nationwide competition.

That’s nearly double the amount of UMW recyclables collected the previous week, showing that friendly competition can change the mindset of campus communities as UMW moves toward a more sustainable future.

Throughout the eight-week competition, the President’s Council on Sustainability, Facilities Services and the student-run Ecology Club will push the UMW community to recycle as much as possible in an effort to win the national competition while encouraging a more sustainable campus.

The Copy Center, Post Office and Bookstore are accepting used printer cartridges which will be recycled, and the Post Office will accept cardboard boxes for reuse or recycling. The Bookstore also is showing the Ecology Club’s Recyclemania commercial on in-store screens.

Assistant Vice President of Business Services Erma Baker has been doing her part to participate in the competition. “I have practiced recycling, have avoided printing when possible, and used a UMW Bookstore water bottle instead of a plastic bottle,” Baker said. She said the business services staff currently is revising its mission statement to emphasize sustainability.

As Recyclemania continues over the next two months, remember to recycle all glass, aluminum, plastics, cardboard and mixed paper!

Green Purchasing Webpage Promotes Sustainability

The UMW Purchasing Department has launched their “green” purchasing webpage devoted to promoting sustainability. The page lists various projects that the university is currently implementing to reduce costs and allow for a healthier environment. Also listed are eco-friendly practices that members of the university are encouraged to follow and green purchasing planning guidelines. The mission is to purchase materials that will decrease our ecological footprint on the Earth. Click on this link http://www.umw.edu/purchasing/green/default.php to check out the new site and find information on how the university is working to fulfill its sustainability goals.

A Holiday Message from your President’s Council on Sustainability

The UMW PCS wishes you each a “green” holiday season, and encourages you to care for the environment while celebrating the season.

Buy Green

  • Choose gifts made from recycled content.

Gift wrapping

  • Use newspaper or brown kraft paper that can be recycled
  • Use tape sparingly, or not at all.

Social Responsibility

  • Volunteer at a local charity.
  • Make a donation in someone’s name instead of purchasing a gift.

Reuse/Recycle
