The following message is from the Office of Student Involvement:
Dear Members of the University Community:
As the new academic year begins, I am writing to provide you with information about the University Center. Over the summer, staff members across campus have worked tirelessly to prepare the building for opening and operation, and we are immensely grateful for their efforts. The University Center promises to be an extraordinary and supportive student-centered space and we are eager to see how it enhances the University community. To that end, as you engage with the UC, we wanted to make sure you were aware of the following information with respect to features, reservations, offices, and dining.
Resident Dining: The University Center’s main dining area is located on the fourth floor of the new facility and is currently serving students, faculty, staff, and families. There you can find WOW and Joe Stacks as part of the offerings.
Meal plans for new students begin on Thursday, August 20, at 5 p.m. and for returning students on Sunday, August 23, at 4 p.m. Prior to the start of meal plans, you may purchase meals at the University Center with EagleOne, cash, or credit. Please note that lunch on Friday, August 21, will be served on Ball Circle. Those not participating in the Common Read discussions may purchase tickets at the Welcome Tent in front of Lee Hall for $10.
As a LEED-certified building, the take-out boxes and mugs for the dining facility must be reusable. These can be purchased at a discount at the Welcome Tent hosted by Dining in front of Lee Hall August 20-23 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. You may also register to win a mountain bike, get free lemonade, and get the new dining brochures!
Other retail dining locations: Qdoba, Jamba Juice, and Lil Joe’s, located on the second floor of the University Center, will begin regular operation Sunday, August 23, at 4 p.m. Naturally Woodstock, located in the Underground, will be open for weekday lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Vocelli Pizza will be available in the Eagle’s Nest beginning on Sunday, August 23, at 4 p.m.
Offices: Most areas – including the Office of Student Involvement, the Office of Student Activities and Engagement (SAE), the James Farmer Multicultural Center, the Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service, and offices for several student organizations – will complete their move into the University Center during Welcome Week, August 24-28. The Center for Career and Professional Development is slated to open in early September.
Features: The University Center will offer several special features, including a first-floor commuter student lounge and the Chandler Ballroom for special events. The SAE suite features meeting space and an available resource room for the use of all ICA-recognized clubs. The fourth floor Linden Terrace offers a beautiful view of Ball Circle and comfortable rocking chairs, available to all University community members.
Reservations: The University Center will begin to accept reservation requests from community members beginning in the next few weeks, and the official reservation portal will be accessible via http://uc.umw.edu. Due to the construction timeline, the University Center staff may not be able to accommodate all reservations. We therefore continue recommending that members of the community have another location on campus formally reserved in case rooms are not fully operational.
When referencing the new center on social media, please use #UMWUC so that we may find your comments!
Any questions you may have may be directed to the Office of Student Activities and Engagement – sae@umw.edu. Again, we look forward to celebrating this exciting new center of student life with the entire University community.
Sincerely,
Melissa Jones Assistant Dean Office of Student Involvement
