Monitoring Tropical Storm Debby

The following message is from Emergency Management & Safety:

UMW Faculty and Staff,

We are monitoring the approach of Tropical Storm Debby through Virginia, as the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center forecast the potential for tropical storm force winds, heavy rain, and severe flooding across the state. Although Gov. Youngkin has declared a state of emergency, at this time, UMW activities, including any early move-in schedules, are not impacted. Any updates or changes will be communicated to those groups directly through Residence Life or the program director. Please check the weather forecast for any individual plans Thursday, August 8 through Friday, August 9 as remnants of the tropical storm are expected during that time.

As with any storm, you can prepare in advance, on or off campus. For employees, please coordinate any schedule adjustments or work locations with your supervisor. If you are on campus and need to report any damage or areas impacted, please complete a work order online. Facilities, Landscape and Grounds will be available to respond as needed.

The impacts of a tropical storm can include strong winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding, with possible tornadoes. This could lead to dangerous road conditions, branches and trees down, power outages, and flying debris. Please monitor the weather through the end of this week, along with your own travel plans, and make any preparations as necessary.

The Virginia Governor’s Office has provided several general recommendations, which include:

  • Make a plan. Plan in advance a route to a safe place, how you will stay in contact with family and friends, and what you will do in different situations. Additional planning resources are available at vaemergency.gov/prepare/make-a-plan.
  • Prepare an emergency kit. For a list of recommended emergency supplies to sustain your household before, during, and after the storm visit: VAemergency.gov/emergency-kit.
  • Stay informed. Virginians should follow the Virginia Department of Emergency Management on X and Facebook for preparedness updates and their local National Weather Service office for the latest weather forecast, advisories, watches or warnings. Download the FEMA app on your smartphone to receive mobile alerts from the National Weather Service. Power outages are always a concern during weather events—make sure you have a battery-operated radio available so you can still receive life-saving alerts.
