In this Talk, we will hear from Andrea Smith, Ph.D., professor of historic preservation at UMW. Dr. Smith will discuss “The Design of Cemeteries and Gravestones.”
Cemeteries are often dismissed as depressing, morbid places. However, cemeteries were America’s first public parks, and their monuments were designed to live up to that distinction. This presentation explores the development of American cemeteries and highlights their key architectural features. If you have ever wondered why obelisks are so prevalent in these landscapes or been curious about the distinctions between mausolea and columbaria, this talk will address those questions and provide the context to enrich your next visit through a cemetery
