You are cordially invited to attend the New Student Summer Orientation information session.  This session gives faculty members the opportunity to review the schedule, ask questions, and learn how to get involved.  Please join us in Lee Hall 412 on Tuesday, April 23 at 4pm.  Light refreshments will be served.

As stated to faculty and staff in the fall, the purpose of New Student Orientation is essentially threefold including:

1) To make earlier, stronger connections with the student (and families). This will aid in the students’ (and families’) understanding of the UMW community, engage our efforts to provide challenge and support, and limit the significant information overload and angst that comes at fall orientation.

2) To support students (and families) by providing an earlier opportunity to ask questions and receive information (in person). The orientation process will provide academic registration and advising, personal financial information and business services, as well as details about residential services and campus life.

3) To aid in University Admissions efforts. Building a strong connection with the student and providing clear communication positively impacts retention rates and higher yield.

Freshman Orientation sessions are two days long and begin early on day one and last through mid-day on the second day.  Transfer Student sessions are one day.

A showing of the documentary film “Girl Rising” will be held at Regal Fredericksburg 14 on Monday, May 20. The film will begin at 5 p.m. and tickets are available for $10. The documentary, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, chronicles the lives of nine girls from countries across the world. The film features voice performances by award-winning actors, including Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson and Meryl Streep.

The Department of General Services, Division of Purchases and Supply has awarded UMW unlimited delegated purchasing authority for non-technology goods, services and printing.  This is another milestone in our quest for increased autonomy and to align UMW with our peers in Higher Ed.

Virginia Contracting Assistant RECERTIFICATION

VCA certified candidates are required to recertify every 5^th year by the last business day of their recertification year. VCA candidates must earn 20 hours with 10 of the hours earned in the last two years of the recertification term.  Stay tuned for upcoming news from the DPS training division; DPS is currently accepting procurement related courses from online sources (such as coursera.org).  These courses will be free and VCA holders can earn up to 10 hours/ VCO candidates up to 32 hours from this source.   More to come.

The University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation has awarded the 2013 Historic Preservation Book Prize to “SynergiCity: Reinventing the Postindustrial City,” edited by Paul Hardin Kapp and Paul J. Armstrong.

“In response to the gripping question of how to renew the postindustrial city, the authors of the essays in the book propose a fascinating viewpoint,” said Cristina Turdean, jury chair and assistant professor of historic preservation. “The book does a superb job in making the reader think in a holistic and practical way of the forces and factors that could and should play a role in the transformation of dormant industrial infrastructure and communities into vibrant urban centers.”

The center awards the Historic Preservation Book Prize annually to a book that a jury deems has made the most significant contribution to the intellectual vitality of historic preservation in America.

Kapp is an associate professor of historic preservation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a licensed architect in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. He served as the historical architect and campus historic preservation manager at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for more than five years.

Armstrong is an associate professor of design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he has taught for more than two decades. He has presented lectures across the country and is co-author of “The Skyscraper and the City: Design, Technology, and Innovation.”

This year, the jury for the $500 prize also included Julia King, associate professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Kaitlin O’Shea, historic preservation specialist at the Vermont Agency of Transportation; Sarah Sanders ’13; Gary Stanton, associate professor of historic preservation at UMW; and Jason Vaughan, director of historic preservation and interpretation at the Baltimore National Heritage Area.

Entries may come from any of the disciplines that relate to the theory or practice of historic preservation. To be eligible for the 2014 prize, a book must be published first in the United States between Jan. 1, 2013 and Dec. 31, 2013.

Established in 1980, the Center for Historic Preservation is a research and public outreach organization affiliated with the UMW Department of Historic Preservation. The center sponsors lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences for students and faculty in the historic preservation department, and it offers programs for the public.
