Admissions Open House, Oct. 17
On Saturday, October 17, 2015, the University of Mary Washington will host an Admissions Open House. About 225 prospective students (typically transfers and high school seniors, juniors, and sophomores) and their families will visit campus between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for this event. Estimated guest count is 800 visitors.
Visitor parking has been reserved in the George Washington parking lot and along Double Drive. Primary event locations are Dodd Auditorium, Lee Hall, Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium, University Center, and campus/residence hall tours in Mason. Expect to see increased foot traffic on campus (especially between 11 and 2) and curious newcomers in the dining facilities. Help them know their presence is a pleasure by anticipating the crowds and responding warmly, especially in the dining hall where crowds will be heavy between noon and 2 p.m.
A special note to University Center diners: please help! Ask visitors if they need assistance locating anything. Help them find a place to sit. Welcome them at your table if there’s room and talk to them about UMW. A kind word or deed shows the heart of our community. Faculty and staff will be involved in an Academic Showcase (9 a.m., University Center Chandler Ballroom), Academic Spotlight sessions (12 noon, various locations), Special Interest sessions (1 p.m., Lee Hall), and Facility Tours (2 p.m., various locations). Thank you to all UMW partners who will spend part of their Saturday highlighting our community!
If you’d like to be involved in Open Houses or have ideas, please contact Admissions at 540.654.2000 or email admit@umw.edu.
While the Office of Admissions sponsors these events, the entire campus assumes the role of host. You represent our brand, our mission, and our sense of the UMW family. One way to show your support is to tweet to @UMWAdmissions and/or post to Instagram and tag @UMWAdmissions. We would like to see #UMWOpenHouse trending throughout the day.
Other Open House dates for 2015-2016 are February 15 and March 25. Thank you for your partnership in showcasing all that is great about UMW!

REDCO Partnering with UMW for Business Program
The UMW Center for Economic Development is partnering with the Rappahannock Economic Development Corporation (REDCO) to provide the CEO+ Program for REDCO 504 loan recipients. The CEO+ Program is a collection of training, business intelligence and financial counseling designed to strengthen the capabilities of small business owners. 504 loan recipients will have access to specialized management training, industry reports, benchmark studies, and financial management assistance. A pilot of the program will begin in October with 10 clients.
Brian Baker, executive director for Economic Development at UMW, stated: “This is a scaled solution with high value data and service that can be deployed quickly to business owners who need to make critical management decisions.” A full launch of the program is planned for January 2016.
REDCO is a licensed non-profit, Certified Development Company that offers long-term fixed-rate financing for small business in Virginia through the SBA 504 Loan Program. The University of Mary Washington Center for Economic Development collaborates with business, government, education and private parties to promote personal, professional and economic growth by advancing knowledge through entrepreneurship, small business development, innovation and competitiveness, research and analysis, and outreach and engagement. UMW’s Arab Culture Club Volunteers at Arabfest
On Saturday Sept. 26, the University of Mary Washington’s Arab Culture Club volunteered at Arab Eid fest, a cultural event in the Washington D.C. area. The club adviser, Professor Maysoon Al-Sayed Ahmad and 14 UMW students set out early that morning and stayed until 4 p.m.
This was the second year the Arab Eid occurred. Last year the festival was only one day with 6,000 attendees. This year, the event was expanded to two days.
The majority of the club members monitored the games, including inflatables for kids. While there, the members were able to interact with the kids and families. The festival organizers provided lunch with different Arab world foods. There was also live Arabic music. During the concert, some of the club members danced in front of the stage alongside other attendees of the festival, learning traditional Arab dances.
The group believed the trip was very successful overall, having learned a lot about Arab culture and having fun in the process, and they would be happy to go back and help again.

Revisions to the Sexual Misconduct Policy and Upcoming Training
The University of Mary Washington (UMW) is committed to providing a safe and non-discriminatory learning, living and working environment for all members of the University community. UMW does not discriminate on the basis of sex or gender in any of its education or employment programs and activities. To that end, our Sexual Misconduct Policy prohibits specific forms of behavior that may violate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”); relevant provisions of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (“VAWA”); Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VII”); the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”); and the Virginia Human Rights Act.
UMW prohibits Sexual Assault, Sexual Exploitation, Intimate Partner Violence, Stalking, Sexual or Gender-Based Harassment, and Retaliation against a person for the good faith reporting of any of these forms of conduct or participation in any investigation or proceeding under the policy (collectively, “Prohibited Conduct”). These forms of Prohibited Conduct are unlawful, undermine the character and purpose of the University, and will not be tolerated
One of the many outcomes of the President appointed UMW Sexual Misconduct Task Force was the revision of our Sexual Misconduct Policy. The revised policy was effective on September 18, 2015 and can be found on Board Docs. Please take a few minutes to review this very important policy. (http://www.boarddocs.com/va/umw/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=93QKQ352EB3D).
In addition, it is important that every employee (except for the Talley Center Staff, the Health Center Staff and designated Title IX Advocates) understands you are a “responsible employee”. This means you are required to report to the Title IX Coordinator all relevant details (obtained directly or indirectly) about an incident of Prohibited Conduct, as defined by policy, that involves any student as a complainant, respondent, or witness, including dates, times, locations and names of parties and witnesses.
Within the next few weeks Human Resources will launch a comprehensive online training course regarding sexual misconduct. This training will be required for all employees and will outline your rights as an employee, your responsibilities and your resources in regards to Sexual Misconduct. The training takes approximately 2 hours; however, it can be taken in segments based on your time allowed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Terri Arthur at 540-654-2015 or tlockhar@umw.edu
