A Newsletter for UMW Faculty and Staff
by Erika Spivey
Campus Dining, UMW athletes, and the Staff Advisory Council (SAC) are joining forces to collect food for the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank as part of Sodexo’s annual Stop Hunger campaign. Last year’s drive brought in 8,278 pounds of food for distribution to area residents and helped our UMW athletes win their conference food drive competition.
SAC is conducting the annual “One Can Hope” campus food drive campaign until December 16, but all the food they collect November 2-10 will count toward this joint Stop Hunger food drive effort.
UMW athletes are collecting donations at the Eagle Village Giant 9-10 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. November 2-5 and 7-9. They are also accepting EagleOne monetary donations at the Top of the UC between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. November 3, 4, 7, & 8. Donation bins can be found in all campus dining facilities, the UMW bookstore, Goolrick, Jepson, Combs, Melchers, Mercer and other campus locations. For additional information contact Rose Benedict, rbenedic@umw.edu.

Campus Dining will soon be hosting our annual Thanksgiving Dinner, Winter Holiday Dinner, and Midnight Breakfast events, and we are in great need of volunteer servers! All members of our campus community, friends and neighbors are invited to join our merry bands of volunteers!
The Thanksgiving Dinner is November 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. and the Winter Holiday Dinner is December 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. Volunteers for these events are asked to serve for a one-hour shift. The Midnight Breakfast is on December 12 from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and volunteers are asked to serve from 10:45 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. These events are lots of fun and the students really enjoy seeing the faculty and staff in chef’s hats serving up holiday goodies. We hope you’ll join in these holiday festivities! For more information or to volunteer contact Rose Benedict at rbenedic@umw.edu.

Are you celebrating the glories of this PIAP* Summer by putting your gardens to bed? Then don’t just “weed them and weep” or “let sleeping dogwoods lie!” “Winter is coming,” by George (Martin, that is) and it’s time to celebrate the poetry of the seasons by joining the FALSTAFF (Faculty, Librarians and Staff) Plant and Seed Exchange Program, sponsored by the President’s Sustainability Council and the BGP (Bard Garden Project).
Please contact Dan Hubbard (dhubbard@umw.edu) or Amme Mahler (aingram@umw.edu) if you are interested. We want to know what you are willing to trade, what you would like to have and any special expertise you might be willing to share with other members of the Mdub Community. In addition, if you have any old planting books that you would be willing to donate to a “Green Lending Library,” please let us know. Long-term, we are hoping to create both a Mary’s Garden and a Shakespeare Garden on our campus, so we’re looking for those who might be interested in participating in either, or both, of these projects.
So whether you’re a “has bean” or just feeling seedy, leaf your worries behind, and share your COBnuts, CAStor beans or COEur de Boeuf tomatoes with your plant(ation) neighbors.
P.S. *PIAP = Politically Incorrect Adjectival Pejorative
The UMW effective date of the new FLSA rule has been changed from November 10 to November 25, 2016. We learned during implementation testing that this change will facilitate a more seamless transition for employees.
The FLSA @ UMW Information Session presentation and FAQ’s are being updated to reflect these changes. Please feel free to submit any questions or concerns about implementation of the new FLSA rule to the Office of Human Resources at Ask a Question. We will get back with you promptly.

Pauline Jenkins was mistakenly left off of the Charles Coleman Service Award Nominee list that was announced during the Employee Fall Luncheon on Tuesday.
Pauline’s Champion was Rosemary Arneson.
“Pauline takes care of all of us in the library, and she works hard to maintain a good relationship with people across campus. By showing that she is willing to meet people halfway, I think Pauline is able to get issues resolved quickly and effectively. She takes the time to listen to people’s concerns, and she is quick to offer an encouraging word. Pauline has a great sense of humor, and she always seems to know when a good laugh is needed.”
Darnel Smith and Zafeer Mobashar were both nominated for the Richard V. Hurley and Rosemary A. Hurley Presidential Commendation Award and not the Coleman Service Award as announced during the luncheon.
The following message is from the Office of Administration and Finance:
Beginning Thursday, October 20, the temporary structure (mobile housing) on College Avenue directly across from Payne Street will be removed and transported to a new location outside of the Fredericksburg area. There will be some disruption to parking as well as street and pedestrian traffic as the units are disassembled and mounted on large tractor trailers. At this time, the exact duration of the removal process is not known but it is expected to take several days.
Please do not hesitate to contact Les Johnson, capital outlay project manager in Facilities, at 654-2100, if you have questions.
Thank you,
Rick Pearce
