Kathy Sandor, Bookstore Manager, and DJ Garcia, Course Materials Manager, traveled to Vermont for the NACAS East Regional Conference where they presented on the Inclusive Digital Access (IDA) pilot program, rolled out this past spring. The goal of IDA is to provide greater access and breadth to course materials more efficiently and at more affordable prices. In focusing on providing tools for student success, the University Bookstore hopes to be an exemplar for future learning models.

Today, all new incoming students and new employees will receive an important email directly from RAVE asking them to log in to the UMW Alerts system. Please know that the University has sanctioned that email, and it is essential that you follow the instructions contained in that email.
If you are a member of the UMW community and have not registered for UMW Alerts, we urge you to visit https://www.getrave.com/login/umw. Click on the “Register” tab in the far right-hand corner. After you submit your information, you will receive a message from Christopher Cash in Emergency Management and Safety inviting you to create an account. Once the account is created, please log in to the site and follow the instructions to customize how and in what order you prefer to receive the emergency notices. Please make sure to save your changes.

New Position for Greta Franklin
Greta Franklin, associate director of the James Farmer Multicultural Center, will be moving to Bloomington, Ill., where she’ll be the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Illinois Wesleyan University. As the Director, Greta will oversee diversity and social justice initiatives for the campus community and provide support for underrepresented students.
Greta is an alumna of the University of Mary Washington (when it was Mary Washington College). Her time as a student leader at Mary Washington led her to a career in Student Affairs. Greta held positions in multicultural affairs and student life at the University of Maryland, College Park, Vassar College, and the Community College of Baltimore County before returning to UMW in 2011 to be the Associate Director of the James Farmer Multicultural Center.
Please be sure to share your best wishes with Greta as she starts this new chapter in her professional career.

This seminar, Finish Line – Living in Retirement, covers post-retirement planning and important factors to consider throughout retirement. Industry professionals will cover a broad range of topics, including retirement security, estate planning and health care.

Please mark your calendar that Banner will be down from 3:00 on Thursday, June 30, until noon on Friday, July 1. This impacts the Banner production environment, including SSB functionality and any system exchanging data with Banner.

The Tragedy in Orlando

Dear UMW Students, Faculty, and Staff:
As you are aware, this weekend our country was once again shaken by profound violence and the senseless loss of life that occurred at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.
When atrocities happen in the world, it serves as a chance for reflection about who we are as a community and what it means to be at Mary Washington. Consistent with our community values, we condemn violence in all forms. We stand by our students who identify as LGBTQ; we stand with our Muslim friends and with all people committed to various faiths in condemning the isolated actions of the gunman.
For students who feel particularly vulnerable or who would like to talk with a counselor, the Talley Center for Counseling Services is open this summer and is available to provide assistance during this difficult time. The Talley Center can be reached at 540-654-1053.

UMW will host new students for Summer Orientation during the second half of June. This process is very important to help our new students and their families acclimate to the University community. Each orientation session is two days in duration and the parking for guests will vary depending on their first or second event day.
As part of this process, the orientation committee has outlined the needed parking for orientation. This may alter where you will need to park during these days, so please plan accordingly.

Farewell to Bethany Friesner
After nearly 9 years of service to the University of Mary Washington, Bethany Friesner will say goodbye to this place that has been like home on June 10. She will be accompanying her husband, two sons and extended family to Massachusetts where her husband has accepted a position with the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission. Please join us in wishing her well at a Farewell Reception in the Randolph/Mason Link from 1-3 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, June 10.
