UMW Galleries Internship: Accepting Applications for 25/26 Academic Year
Faculty and students,
Please share with your students and friends!
The UMW Galleries’ Internship Program is now accepting applications for the Fall 2025 / Spring 2026 Academic Year. Applications are due by end of day (11:59pm) on February 28, 2025.
An internship with the UMW Galleries provides students with hands-on experience in museum collections management, exhibition design, and gallery administration. Interns participate in many diverse projects under the direction of the Director and Exhibition Coordinator. Some activities include: digitizing and photographing the collection for our online database, updating collections storage facilities with archival quality materials, install and de-install exhibitions, providing tours to visiting groups, and much more.
Each semester the Galleries will employ 4-5 interns who want to pursue careers and gain expertise in the fields of Art, Art History, and Museum Studies. Internships may be one to three academic credits, with each credit equaling three hours of work in the galleries a week.
Internships are open to all UMW students. Priority is given to graduating seniors in the relevant fields of Art History, Studio Art, Historic Preservation, and Museum Studies. Students can access and complete the application here.

Corinne Melchers’ Gifts of Creativity Exhibit, Opens Mar. 1
Corinne Melchers’ Gifts of Creativity – A Commemorative Exhibition at Gari Melchers Home and Studio
An exhibition highlighting the creative talents and visionary philanthropy of Corinne Melchers will open on March 1, 2025 at Gari Melchers Home and Studio.
Gari Melchers (1860-1932), an internationally acclaimed artist during his lifetime, had studios in various cities, settling first in Egmond aan Zee, Holland and then Falmouth, Virginia in 1916, where he and Corinne (1880-1955) established strong community connections.
Devotion to her husband’s artistic legacy inspired Corinne Melchers to bequeath their rural retreat, Belmont, to the Commonwealth of Virginia at her death in 1955. The 70th anniversary of that bequest coincides in 2025 with the 50th anniversary of Gari Melchers Home and Studio opening to the public.
Starting March 1, 2025, the galleries at Gari Melchers Home and Studio will feature Corinne as her husband’s creative partner. An art student when they met, Corinne channeled her talents into nurturing Belmont’s gardens, cultivating floral varieties that appear in several of Gari’s still life paintings. These works, and others depicting the local community, will be highlighted throughout the year. The couple’s civic engagement, from local garden club membership to state and national museum advocacy to support of charitable organizations, will also be recognized.
Friends of Belmont can sign up for a special viewing of the exhibition with Assistant Director and Curator Susan Martis on Saturday, March 8 from 9:30-10:30 AM and 3:30-4:30 PM. Please RSVP by March 5 to Membership Manager Jennifer Pinkerton at jpinkerton@umw.edu if you will attend. Maximum gallery capacity for each session is 20 persons.
Join us to experience art, nature and history with Corinne Melchers’ Gifts of Creativity!

UMW Police to Host Training Exercise on Fredericksburg Campus, March 5-7
The University of Mary Washington Police will conduct a first responder training exercise on Wednesday, March 5, Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7, 2025, on the Fredericksburg campus. The exercise is in collaboration with local and state public safety agencies and led by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. It will utilize empty areas of campus during the scheduled Spring Break, when classes are not in session.
The training gives law enforcement, public safety and emergency management teams the opportunity to practice a coordinated response to a simulated incident in a campus facility. Russell and Marshall Halls – two residence halls offline and scheduled for demolition in the coming year – will be the primary site. Both buildings are already closed to the public. Police vehicles will be parked in the adjacent Marshall lot and police activity may be visible during the exercise, which includes a simulated interior active shooter response.
Signage will be visible on the buildings and on surrounding sidewalks to alert the campus community and neighbors during the two-day training exercise. While some activity will occur outside of the buildings, it will all be contained on campus and mostly occur within the two buildings. A classroom session will be held on the first day.
The exercise is not open to the public.
