Senior Studio Art Exhibit, April 19-27
New Gallery Exhibitions on Display, through April 27 and June 1
Two exciting new exhibitions are on display: The 2025 Annual Student Art Exhibition and Self Adjacent, a traveling exhibition about parenthood.
On display in DuPont Gallery April 8 – April 27, the Annual Student Art Exhibition showcases the incredible talent and creativity of UMW students. This year’s guest juror is New York-based painter and writer Jason Stopa, who joined us on campus last month to meet the students and give a talk. Out of 98 submissions, Stopa selected 40 artworks by 30 students. It really is a stunning exhibition of the strengths and skills of our student community.
On view in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery April 8 – June 1, Self Adjacent examines the transforming experience of parenthood by artists as they navigate their many identities alongside and within the field of caregiving. Featuring the diverse viewpoints of twenty artists from across North America, Self Adjacent includes photography, performance, painting, printmaking, video, textile, and sculpture. The exhibition traveled to the Visual Arts Center in Richmond, Massey Klein Gallery in Manhattan, and the Kennedy Museum of Art in Athens, Ohio, before coming to UMW.

Self Adjacent examines the transforming experience of parenthood by artists on display through June 1.
Self Adjacent was curated by Sarah Irvin and Tracy Stonestreet. Artists include: Alberto Aguilar, Robin Assner-Alvey, Christa Donner, Travis Donovan, Meg Foley, Kate Gilmore, LaToya Hobbs, Sarah Irvin, Kevin and Jen Johnson, Carmichael Jones, Courtney Kessel, Chloé Clevenger, Colleen Merrill, Qiana Mestrich, Sarah Sudhoff, Emilia White, William Glaser Wilson, Megan Wynne, and Bohyun Yoon.

Pressure Washing and Tree Work on Campus, through April 28
Through the end of April, we’ll have extra landscape and grounds work on campus, including pressure washing several areas. This regular spring cleaning helps to remove pollen and debris from our high traffic areas. The pressure washing will not block pathways, but please be aware of it as you exit buildings.
Please note the following schedule:
- April 14 Anderson Center (North wall and sidewalk across from the pedestrian bridge only)
- April 16 Campus Walk and around James Farmer Hall
- April 17 Virginia Hall entry (fountain side) and George Washington Hall steps (Campus Walk side)
- April 21 James Farmer Hall (bust, patio knee walls each side of front steps)
- April 22-25 Simpson/HCC/Woodard Arcade
- April 28 Bell Tower
In addition, tree work will be happening through April 28, including large branch removal on each end of campus around Route 1 and William St. Lane closures may be needed with traffic control measures in place, so please look for these changes during your commute. Pruning of the holly trees at Double Drive will take place April 21-23, with overnight and early morning parking closures in that area.
If you have questions about this work, please contact Director of Landscape and Grounds Holly Chichester-Morby at hchiches@umw.edu.

Randall Helmstutler Named Director of Undergraduate Programs at College-Level
Following an internal search, Professor Randall Helmstutler has been selected for the position of Director of Undergraduate Programs in the newly formed college of business, computer science, economics, and mathematics.
Randall joined the University of Mary Washington faculty in 2005 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia, following an M.S. at the University of Illinois, and a B.S. at Radford University, all in mathematics. An advocate for inquiry-based pedagogies and alternative assessment models, Randall serves on the regional executive leadership board for the COMMIT (Community for Mathematics Inquiry in Teaching) network of the Mathematical Association of America. He has organized and chaired special sessions and workshops on IBL and grading-for-growth models for regional and national conferences of the MAA, and is now completing a three-year term on a national conference organization committee for the association.
Randall served as chair of the Department of Mathematics for over six years, overseeing the department over a period of growth. During this time Randall had a significant role in mathematics curricular reform movements at the state and national level. This work led to appointments by VDOE and VCCS as the four-year institution representative for the Commonwealth in multi-year projects such as the national New Mathways program from the University of Texas Dana Center, SCHEV’s Transfer Virginia, and VDOE’s Mathematics Pathways Initiative. In 2022, Randall was nominated to participate in COPLAC’s Beard Leadership Circle, and was later invited to serve as a program organizer and mentor for future cohorts.
In his new leadership role as Director of Undergraduate Programs, Randall will oversee undergraduate recruitment, retention, and graduation initiatives, and will collaborate with the Dean to develop marketing strategies and partnerships. He will play a key role in fostering undergraduate research, innovation, and entrepreneurship while managing academic partnerships. Additionally, Randall will work with faculty and department chairs to drive program innovation, ensure curriculum alignment with industry trends, and facilitate new program development. His leadership will also extend to faculty success, where he will support faculty mentoring, oversee development grants, and advance research initiatives, fostering a culture of continuous growth and academic excellence.
Thanks to the search committee, Larry Lehman (chair), Shawn Humphrey, Smita Jain Oxford, and Jessica Zeitz, for their commitment to a methodical approach to the search process, their diligent and thoughtful analyses, and the effective, great leadership of Professor Lehman.
Please congratulate Professor Helmstutler!
