October Coffee Talk: Empowering Entrepreneurs, Oct. 8
October’s Coffee Talk session, Empowering Entrepreneurs: Fostering Independence and Inspiring the Next Generation, will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 8 to 9 a.m. at *718 Venue, 718 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg. Parking is available at Riverfront Park, George Street Lot, and Sophia Street Parking Deck. Street parking is also available along Caroline Street.
In a recent survey, 90% of people said they would like to own a business. Independence and autonomy are primary reasons given for this desire. In this Coffee Talk, we’ll discuss ways entrepreneurship empowers business owners and how business owners can empower their employees and the next generation of business owners.
This Coffee Talk will be facilitated by Susan Ball, Director of the UMW SBDC.Susan Ball is the Director of the University of Mary Washington SBDC and a Certified Business Analyst. She works with clients to evaluate business opportunities, forecast cash flows, develop marketing strategies, prepare loan proposals, and write business plans. She also assists clients in registering to do business with state and federal agencies and obtaining applicable minority business certifications. She teaches Blue Print Business Plan seminars. She is certified as a NxLevel instructor and a GrowthWheel advisor. Susan has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Mary Washington and an MBA in finance from the University of Florida. Prior to working with the SBDC, Susan co-authored finance textbooks, taught high school mathematics, and owned a pizza restaurant. She has been with the SBDC since the fall of 2007 and has worked with hundreds of clients during that time.

Fall Employee Luncheon (and Professional Photos), Oct. 15
The Fall Employee Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Cedric Rucker University Center, Chandler Ballroom. Employee award winners will be announced. Please complete the response form by Friday, October 11, if you will attend.
Employee and faculty photos will also be available outside the ballroom on Oct. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m.
University Budget Advisory Committee Meeting, Sept. 20
The University Budget Advisory Committee (UBAC) works in advisory fashion with the Provost and Chief Academic Officer (CAO), the Vice President for Administration and Finance (CFO), the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement on short- and long-term University budget priorities. Each fall semester UBAC communicates their priorities on future budgets to the CFO, CAO, and the UFC in a report due on December 1.
UBAC meets monthly and invites representatives of departments or areas that would like advocacy on their behalf to request a meeting using this form. Guests will be scheduled first come, first serve for meetings held on 9/20, 10/4, 11/15 from 12:00-1:00 PM via Zoom. Requests that cannot be accommodated in the same month will be scheduled for the next month. More information about UBAC and requesting a meeting can be found here.

President’s Council on Sustainability Meetings Resume Sept. 20
The President’s Council on Sustainability (PCS) will resume meetings this fall beginning on Friday, September 20th from 4-5pm in the Hurley Convergence Center, Room 111. Additional meetings will take place in the Hurley Convergence Center, Room 111 on Friday, October 25th from 3-4pm and Friday, November 22nd from 4-5pm.
PCS meetings are held each month of the fall and spring semester and are open to employees, students and the public. The council plans, discusses and helps coordinate ways to support sustainable-related activities at UMW. Please consider attending and sharing this information with other members of the UMW and Fredericksburg community. To attend virtually, click on the Zoom link.
