Public Health Reminders and Vaccine Clinics for the Fall 2023
Dear UMW Community,
With the start of classes this week, we’ve received a few questions about COVID protocols and want to share reminders about ways to stay well this fall. Our COVID information and resources are now available on the Student Health Center website.
The Student Health Center will continue to provide information and guidance on COVID and other respiratory illnesses, including reminders of proactive and precautionary measures, updates on quarantine and isolation instructions, and vaccine clinics in the fall. We have discontinued isolation spaces on campus, which were available during the height of the pandemic. If you test positive for COVID, you should contact your healthcare provider and follow the latest CDC guidance on isolation. We also recommend that you have a few self-tests available should you experience symptoms or have an exposure to COVID.
You no longer need to report cases to the University, but we encourage you to stay home or go home if you are sick following the guidance of the CDC and your healthcare provider for any illness. You’ll need to continue to communicate with your instructors or supervisors to make up assignments or make alternate arrangements when you miss class or work.
As the public health emergency for COVID-19 ended on May 11, 2023, we archived many of the pages of the UMW COVID website and concluded the weekly updates. You’ll hear from us when new resources or guidance is available or when there are significant updates from the CDC. In addition, we’ll provide public health updates when there are new programs or opportunities such as the initiatives below.
- This fall, UMW added TimelyCare to expand mental health services for our students. The virtual service, available to students via a website or an app, offers on-demand options to students beyond the in-person hours of the Talley Center for Counseling Services. TimelyCare uses single sign-on so students can easily access it with your UMW NetID, but note you’ll need to complete an info form the first time you log-in. An FAQ is also available for students, families, and faculty and staff to share information about this service.
- All health plans offered to state employees and their dependents have employee assistance programs (EAPs). Included are up to four sessions at no charge for such services as mental health, alcohol or drug abuse assessment, child or elder care, grief counseling and legal or financial services.
- The Student Health Center is collaborating with Giant Pharmacy to offer on-campus vaccine clinics this fall. The clinics are open to students, faculty, and staff with no appointment needed. Vaccines for flu, COVID, shingles, meningitis, pneumonia and tetanus will be available, typically at no cost with most insurance. For more information call the Student Health Center at 540-654-1040 or contact Associate Director Rene Sanders at rsanders@umw.edu. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Tuesday, Sept. 19; Thursday, Oct. 26; or Wednesday, Nov. 15. The vaccine clinic is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on each date in the Cedric Rucker University Center.

UMW Adds TimelyCare to Expand Mental Health Services
The University of Mary Washington has expanded student access to mental health services 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the addition of TimelyCare, an on-demand telehealth platform. The virtual platform, available to students via a website or an app, offers on-demand options to students beyond the in-person hours of the Talley Center for Counseling Services.
Faculty and staff are often the first line of support for students who can benefit from care. If you are a UMW faculty or staff member and need additional support for students, call 833-4-TIMELY (press 2) any time, day or night.
To keep the conversation going with students, you can start with “It sounds like you’re having a really tough time. Did you know UMW now provides counseling services both in person and virtually? Talley Center provides in-person individual and group counseling, and TimelyCare is available 24/7. We could call their number together to get you support.”
Use this service when students shows academic signs of distress or physical and psychological signs of distress; refers to self-harm; discloses problems with family, peers, a significant other or a recent personal loss; isolates from peers, faculty or staff; or is identified by peers as potentially needing support. Campus Walk Detour Between Bell Tower and James Farmer Hall
Updated: August 11
Campus Walk has now reopened from the north end to James Farmer Hall. The detour at GW Hall will remain in place for a couple more weeks as steam pipe work is completed in this area.
GW Hall and Randolph and Mason Halls remain accessible from Double Drive. Please use the south entrance of GW Hall. Please follow the detour on the sidewalk at Randolph and Mason Halls as Campus Walk is restored in this area.
The sections of Campus Walk where waterline work took place are refilled and topped with compact stone dust until the brick pavers can be replaced. These sections are open, but may have temporary closures as the masonry work is finished. The pathway between the Cedric Rucker University Center and Virginia Hall is now open as well.
Thank you for your patience and allowing extra time to traverse campus this summer. Should you have any questions, please contact Freda Rosso, Assistant Director for Capital Outlay, at frosso@umw.edu.
From August 2:
Campus Walk is currently closed between the Bell Tower and James Farmer Hall as construction crews connect new waterlines.
GW Hall and Randolph and Mason halls remain accessible from Double Drive. Please use the south entrance of GW Hall. Please follow the detour on the sidewalk at Randolph and Mason halls. James Farmer Hall can be accessed from the east side, via the pathways at the Amphitheatre.
Lee Hall is accessible from the north side of the building, via the Sunken Road entrance or from Cedric Rucker University Center and Virginia Hall pathways.
If you travel across campus from Lee Hall south or need to reach areas of campus from the Bell Tower, please do so via the sidewalk on College Avenue and enter through the Cedric Rucker University Center. The new sidewalk on Ball Circle at the Cedric Rucker University Center remains available, and we recommend using College Avenue to avoid the construction area as we make these critical connections in the waterlines.
Please see a diagram indicating the accessible path via College Avenue and the available detour (closed to thru traffic) at Mason and Randolph Halls. For a full map of accessible pathways on campus, please visit the Maps and Directions webpage.
We anticipate this section of Campus Walk opening again the week of Aug. 7. Thank you for your flexibility and patience.
Should you have any questions, please contact Assistant Director for Capital Outlay Freda Rosso at frosso@umw.edu.
