UMW to Offer Japanese Language Courses
January 29, 2020 by Jill Laiacona
Spending a semester in Japan, UMW senior Kaitlin Viloria was in a shop when a young woman asked her a question. The woman spoke no English and Viloria’s Japanese was limited, but they still managed to strike up a conversation. Viloria wishes she was more proficient, she said, “but in that moment, I was proud […]
UMW Pathway Provides Grad-Level Engineering Opportunities
October 22, 2019 by Jill Laiacona
Engineers share a lot in common with superheros. The latter leap tall buildings in a single bound, fight evil-doers and travel faster than a speeding bullet. The former design sustainable and safe infrastructure, combat cyber-crime and create signals that move at lightning speed. UMW students aren’t caped crusaders, but they need to be prepared to […]

April 2, 2019 by Jill Laiacona
Maybe it was the beautiful campus. Or that it was nestled in a small town rather than a huge metropolis. Perhaps it was because it was a public university with a strong emphasis on the liberal arts. Whatever the reason, the Japanese school reminded Kevin Hockmuth ’00 of his beloved alma mater, almost 7,000 miles […]

The food bank needed help getting fresh produce to needy families. A literacy group sought tutors to help adults with reading, writing and basic math. A local high school wanted guest speakers to teach mindfulness and stress management techniques to teenagers. All of them congregated with more than 100 others in the Digital Auditorium of […]
UMW Hits High Notes With New Pianos
March 22, 2019 by Jill Laiacona
Andrew Kraus was in the middle of a performance when he heard it. After playing the first of Brahms’s powerful and dramatic Rhapsodies, Op. 79, he began playing a softer piece. As his hands danced deftly and gracefully across the keys, he heard a distinctive “twang” that rang out through the hushed Dodd Auditorium. It […]

Sharpless Receives Distinguished Research Award
March 21, 2019 by Jill Laiacona
Charlie Sharpless had a problem to solve. He was finishing his post-doctoral fellowship and wasn’t quite sure where to go next. He loved teaching and conducting research, but there were few positions at large research universities where he could mix these two elements.
But with the University of Mary Washington, he found the perfect chemistry.
As a professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry, Sharpless combines equal parts teaching, advising and research to make new discoveries in environmental chemistry and educate the next generation of scientists and industry leaders. Now he is being honored with the Distinguished Research Award by the Virginia section of the American Chemical Society at its annual award ceremony in Richmond this evening, on Thursday, March 21.
