Gari Melchers to Host Art after Hours

Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will host its third Art After Hours event on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Featuring a live music performance from The Brokedown Boys on the lawn, the program will include local beer and wine from Stafford County’s 6 Bears & a Goat Brewing Company andPotomac Point Winery, as well as food offered by UFO Food Truck. The studio galleries will also be open for viewing during the event, which take place from 6-8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Beer and wine tickets will be available for $5 each with proper identification, and food will be sold from the truck. Pre-registration is requested.

2nd Annual Eagle Club Golf Tournament

Calling all UMW faculty, staff and friends:

After a very successful inaugural tournament in 2015, UMW Athletics is excited to announce that the 2nd Annual Eagle Club Golf Tournament will return for Family Weekend 2016!

The Eagle Club is the fundraising arm of UMW Athletics. Its mission is to maximize opportunities and strengthen support services for Mary Washington’s student-athletes in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The inaugural EC Golf Tournament raised just over $10,000!

Included in the $150 cost to play is a $50 “Flight Level” donation to the Eagle Club. The tournament will also provide range balls, free drinks on the course, a pre-tournament lunch and post-tournament dinner, great prizes and more! Golfers may sign up individually, with a pair, or as an entire foursome.

The event will return to Augustine Golf Club, home of UMW Men’s Golf, which begins their first season as a varsity sport this fall. The program will be immediately eligible for CAC and NCAA championships. Women’s Golf will be UMW’s 23rd sport program and will begin play next fall.

The Eagle Club Golf Tournament is an opportunity to celebrate and support the University of Mary Washington’s tradition of athletic excellence. Whether you’re a scratch golfer, a weekend hacker, or you’ve never picked up a club, your support of this event will make an immediate impact on the success of our student athletes and the quality of our athletic programs. Our goal is to have all athletic programs across all eras represented. The event is more than just an opportunity to get together. We want you to reconnect with old teammates, visit old friends and make new ones, and meet the staff. But we do this with purpose: the golfing will be great, but we gather to support UMW student-athletes.

We have a great tradition and great pride because of many present and past who have supported those who wear the navy and gray. Let’s keep it going. I look forward to seeing you show your commitment at the 2nd Annual Eagle Club Golf Tournament. Thank you!

S.A.C. SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE EXTENDED

The S.A.C. school supply drive ends THIS FRIDAY, Sept. 9. Please drop off your supply donations in one of our collection boxes. Collection box locations are included in the school supply drive flyer. Final pickup will be Friday morning.

 

AREA SURVEY – ATTITUDES ABOUT HOMELESSNESS

Community-wide input is being sought, and your participation in the following survey on homelessness is requested and appreciated. The survey should take only 5-10 minutes to complete. Individual responses will be entirely anonymous. The survey was created by UMW sociology professor. Debra Schleef on behalf of the Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care. The results will be used to further their mission toward ending homelessness in our community. A summary report of the results will be available on their website in early 2017.

PROCUREMENT SERVICES OPEN FORUM
Procurement Services is holding an open forum Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the HCC Digital Auditorium. Topics of discussion include eVA requisitions, IT purchasing process, WORKS spending and dashboard reporting, Procurement Services website review, and more. Procurement will also be available to answer questions.

Janamitra Devan, Ph.D., will discuss key megatrends that are shaping the world we work in. Some are great; others may turn out to be disastrous. But all will impinge on the way each of us work in the future, and will impact income and wealth creation.

About Janamitra “Dev” Devan, PhD

Janamitra Devan currently advises several senior leaders on a range of economic, financial and policy issues.  He is currently a member of the Chinese B20 Task Force on the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).  He was the Senior Advisor to the Chair of the Turkish B20 in 2015. In that capacity, he was responsible for guiding Fortune 500 B20 Corporate leaders in the formulation of recommendations to the G20 Heads of State that took place at the end of 2015. He successfully steered the process to obtain endorsement from G20 Heads of State for the formation of new multilateral organization, the World SME Forum, which was inaugurated in 2015.

Dev is a recognized expert on megatrend assessments, competitiveness, strategy and leadership.  He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Competitiveness that advises the organization formulate an agenda for global leaders attending the annual Davos Forum. He is also a member of the ‘Future Circles’ initiative of the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and WEF, comprising a group of 30 global intellectual leaders who advice the Cabinet of the UAE on mapping their future strategy.  He is also a member of the Airbus Industries Group’s STAR Program, a grouping of top luminaries in various fields who regularly interact with Airbus Group’s Group Executive Committee members.  He is also a member of the Global Dean’s Council of the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and Senior Advisor to the premier Turkish think-tank, the Economic Policy & Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV).

Dev has held several leadership positions throughout his career.  He was until recently the Vice President of the World Bank and IFC’s Financial & Private Sector Network (2009-2013), and prior to that, the Director for Asia at the McKinsey Global Institute in Shanghai (2006-2009).  Earlier in Washington DC (1999-2006), he served as McKinsey’s Director of Operations of its flagship Global Strategy Practice, and before that as Principal Consultant at Standard & Poors DRI/McGraw-Hill (1992-1998).

In the bottom photo, he strikes a pose with Todd “Parney” Parnell, Richmond Flying Squirrels GM and Chip Tarkenton, UMW Eagle Club booster. More than 200 UMW faculty, staff, alumni and friends enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie at the third annual Fredericksburg Night at the Diamond in Richmond. Dr. Paino threw out the first pitch.

SAC Excellent Eagle is Lucy Quann!

Congratulations to Lucy Quann, SAC’s Excellent Eagle Employee for September 2016!

In nominating Lucy, her champions, Lynne Richardson and Ken Machande, wrote: “Lucy cheerfully supports the entire COB faculty and staff, making sure we have everything we need to deliver a quality business education to our students.  In addition to her day-to-day activities, she managed the packing, move and unpacking from our 2.5 year home on the second floor of George Washington Hall to renovated Woodard Hall back in December.  She is passionate about serving our students and does whatever she can to ensure that the College of Business brand is represented as we want it to be!  I’ve seen her picking up trash and resetting a classroom in advance of a Destination Day visit to our class.  She knows who to call on campus when we have needs and has ferociously negotiated with vendors to get us the best price when we are in the market to purchase an item.  While the least favorite part of her job involves paying bills, she perseveres and gets it done!  We are fortunate to have her and think she deserves to be recognized for her efforts!”

The U.S. Department of Labor along with UMW’s Human Resources and Payroll Departments are working to help you achieve work-life balance and get compensated for hours worked. Plan to attend one of the upcoming information sessions.

Paino Outlines 2016-17 Priorities at Opening Faculty Meeting

As part of UMW’s annual opening faculty meeting on Thursday, Aug. 25, President Troy Paino outlined his priorities for the upcoming academic year. Through collaboration and transparency, Paino discussed the necessity of building a foundation of trust over the next year in order to move UMW forward. Paino outlined the following nine priorities for the upcoming academic year, which have been approved by the Board of Visitors:

Determine a clear set of indicators for success. Identify high-level institutional indicators that speak to the university’s definition of success. This will include a conversation about re-identifying peer and aspirational institutions.

Finalize the strategic enrollment plan. Currently underway, the strategic enrollment plan is being created by a group of faculty and staff to determine UMW’s academic/student profile.

Update the university’s master plan. Address building needs on campus with a focus on older residence halls in order to stay competitive in student recruitment.

Create a committee to develop a Diversity Action Plan. Reporting directly to the president, the committee will discuss strategies for recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and workforce.

Update the budget. Address the budget in a way that creates room for future strategic investments, includes a solution for salary issues, develops new opportunities for revenue and is mindful of reserves.

Capitalize on regional opportunities. At the core, UMW is a traditional liberal arts and sciences institution, but the addition of programs for nontraditional students has the opportunity to increase revenue.

Develop and implement a plan to address faculty and staff salary issues. Create and implement a plan that addresses workforce salary issues over the next three years.

Conduct an environmental scan of UMW’s position in the marketplace. Analyze our institution’s place within the greater higher education landscape.

Articulate UMW’s vision by the end of the academic year. Be able to clearly articulate the past and traditions of UMW, the strengths of its current community and where the university is headed.
