The White House recently released a searchable online database with information about every U.S. degree-granting institution. The database, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center, compares a university’s costs, graduation rate, loan default rate, median borrowing and employment with national averages. According to the White House website, the College Scorecard will “help empower students and families with more transparent information about college costs and outcomes, so that they can choose a school that is affordable, best-suited to meet their needs, and consistent with their educational and career goals.”

UMW’s scorecard is available in PDF format or by searching for “University of Mary Washington” on http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/education/higher-education/college-score-card.

The results of the second week of RecycleMania show UMW ranked first in Virginia and 21st of 400 in the overall Per Capita Classic division, with 7.935 pounds of recycling per person.

This is equal to:

• 60 Metric Tons of CO2 Equivalent, or
• 12 cars off the road, or
• the energy consumption of five households

Diane Moore, Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University, will present “Religious Literacy and Democratic Citizenship in National and Global Contexts” on Wednesday, March 20. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in Lee Hall, Room 411 and is free and open to the public. Moore’s lecture is sponsored by the Department of Political Science and International Affairs, the Campus Academic Resources Committee and the Department of Classics, Philosophy, and Religion. The Center for International Education is happy to announce the installation of a new wayfarer’s sign on Campus Walk in front of Lee Hall. The sign provides distances from UMW to various global cities, many of which are popular study abroad destinations. It’s part of the Center’s “You Can Get There from Here” campaign, designed to raise awareness about education abroad opportunities and contribute to the internationalization of our campus.
