The University of Mary Washington chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa of Virginia, recently inducted 46 students and one alumna into the chapter.  Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest academic honor society.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776 and has since upheld the principles of freedom of inquiry and liberty of thought and expression, sponsoring activities to advance the study of the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences. The society invites the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America’s leading colleges and universities for membership.

The UMW chapter, Kappa of Virginia, selects its members based on rigorous scrutiny of students’ academic achievements as demonstrated through grade point averages.  This year, the UMW chapter chose seniors with weighted GPAs of 3.74 or higher and a select group of juniors.

The chapter also extended an offer of membership to alumna Rebecca Young Guy, class of 1961, for her outstanding career as an educator and community activist. Guy, a Stafford County, Va., resident, taught English and Latin in Fredericksburg, Stafford and Quantico for 44 years. She is the co-founder of the Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence and founding member of the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad.

More than 200 donors and students gathered at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center April 14, 2012, for the annual Donor Appreciation Luncheon. Guests enjoyed a special Student Showcase in the Mayo Courtyard. Inside the Rappahannock Grand Ballroom, the program featured remarks by UMW Foundation Chair Kathy Mehfoud ’70, UMW President Richard V. Hurley, scholarship donor Art Steinberg, and former scholarship recipient Fiona Cobb ’08. Keepsake photos of donors and recipients were taken in front of Kalnen Inn. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc., will be the featured speakers at the Fredericksburg Forum on Saturday, November 10. The lecture, “An Evening of Entrepreneurial Spirit, Social Responsibility and Radical Business Philosophy,” will be held at 8 p.m. in George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium.

Since Cohen and Greenfield served the first Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Burlington, Vt., in 1978, the company has grown into a multi-million dollar entity with an international presence.

Cohen and Greenfield received the Corporate Giving Award from the Council on Economic Priorities in 1988 and were named U.S. Small Businesspersons of the Year by President Ronald Reagan the same year. Their bestselling 1997 book “Ben & Jerry’s Double-Dip: How to Run a Values-Led Business and Make Money, Too” uses their experiences at the helm of Ben & Jerry’s to illustrate their views on socially conscious entrepreneurship. Greenfield currently serves as president of the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation.

For the more than 4,000 people who attended UMW’s Multicultural Fair on Saturday, April 14, the campus was transformed into a space for music, dance, art and food from countless cultures.

“The day was a great mixture of student performances as well as local and regional performers,” said Greta Franklin, associate director of the James Farmer Multicultural Center. “It made the day unique and special.”

Franklin said about 60 UMW volunteers helped make this year’s event possible.
