The Dahlgren Heritage Museum Community Forum on Wednesday, May 9 will feature Mary Lacey, a former senior official at Dahlgren and now the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development, test and evaluation. The one-hour long forum will begin at 5 p.m. at UMW’s Dahlgren Center for Education and Research.

Ed Jones, the president of the Dahlgren Heritage Foundation, will moderate the discussion. Topics are expected to relate to Dahlgren’s past and future as a key research and development site for the Navy. The forum is free and open to the public.

Teachers, coordinators, administrators, and university faculty will be joining together on Saturday, June 2 for the Summer 2012 EdTech Conference “Leading through Change: Teaching, Learning, and Technology” at the University of Mary Washington’s Stafford Campus. Throughout the day, participants will experience sessions on teaching, learning, and technology integration that center around leadership and change in the 21st century K12 classroom.

The day will begin with a Kkeynote by John Hendron, Supervisor of Instructional Technology at Goochland County Public Schools in Virginia. We also will have experts in the field provide special presentations throughout the day, to include the ITRTs from Spotsylvania County Schools.

Faculty and students from UMW are encouraged to present their knowledge and experience in teaching and learning as it relates to technology.

Who: All K-12 teachers, pre-service teachers, administrators, University educators and technology specialists, and others interested in educational technology

What: Keynote Speaker, Peer Sessions, Student  and Teacher Technology Showcases, Panel Discussions, Vendor Fair, Door Prizes (to include technology hardware and software).

The UMW Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” opens tonight at Klein Theatre. Additional performances will be on April 13-14 and April 19-21 at 8 p.m., and April 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. in Klein Theatre, duPont Hall. Tickets are $14 for general admission, $12 for students and senior citizens and $6 for faculty, staff and students with a UMW ID.

“Hedda Gabler” is directed by Helen M. Housley, associate professor of theatre. Scenic design is by Julie Hodge, associate professor of theatre; costume design is by Kevin McCluskey, associate professor of theatre; and lighting design is by David Hunt, professor of theatre. The Department of Art and Art History announced the recipients of its student awards at the Thursday, April 5 opening of the Annual Student Art Exhibition at the duPont Gallery.

Senior Katie Rosinski of Ocean Pines, Md., was given the Melchers Gray Purchase Award for her work “Housed,” which will become part of the university’s permanent collection. Rosinski also was given the Anne Elizabeth Collins Award.

Senior Hilary Galbreaith of Richmond, Va., was given the Emil Schnellock Award in Painting, for her painting “x:y.”

The following students received awards of distinction at the exhibition’s opening ceremony: senior Alexandra Atkeson of Falls Church, junior Christina Bendo of Leesburg, senior Elizabeth Botha of Reston and junior Jacqueline Stern of Locust Grove.

The event was judged by Rebecca Cross, owner and curator of Cross Mackenzie Gallery in Washington D.C., who selected works for the exhibition from more than 100 submissions.

The Annual Student Art Exhibition in the duPont Gallery is open to the public free of charge and will run through Sunday, April 20. Some artwork will be for sale.

The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library has been awarded two event support grants totaling $3,000 by the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority (EDA) on Monday, April 9.  Both grants were awarded under the EDA’s JumpStart! program, which stimulates economic development by supporting events and projects undertaken by city businesses and nonprofit organizations.

One grant, for $1,000, supports performers at two museum events commemorating the birthdays of James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth Kortright Monroe. The events include a presidential birthday celebration on Saturday, April 28 and Mrs. Monroe’s birthday tea on Saturday, June 9.

The second grant, for $2,000, supports performer fees and logistics for the 23rd Annual Fredericksburg Welsh Festival on September 22.
