Stafford Campus Now Virginia Green Member

The conference facilities at the UMW Stafford Campus have been approved as a member of Virginia Green, a statewide program that promotes eco-friendly practices in Virginia’s tourism industry.

Virginia Green is a partnership of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Hospitality and Tourism Association.

On the Virginia Green website, the UMW profile outlines the green practices used at the Stafford campus, including recycling, minimal use of disposable food service products, solid waste reduction, and conservation of water and energy:

The North Building at the Stafford Campus received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2007, the year the building opened.

Its green features include a reflective roof that reduces heat and contributes to the building’s energy efficiency. The monitoring system allows the tracking of mechanical equipment to ensure high performance and maximum efficiency over the building’s lifetime. Energy saving measures also include energy efficient glazing, additional wall and roof insulation, more efficient chillers and boilers, energy recovery ventilators and more efficient lighting than required by code.
