Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jangwoon “Leo” Lee had his article “A Stochastic Galerkin Method for Stochastic Control Problems” published in the journal Communications in Computational Physics.
Keith Mellinger, associate professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics, saw his co-authored article “Semiovals from Unions of Conics” published in the most recent issue of Innovations in Incidence Geometry. The article completely characterizes certain types of semiovals, special structures in finite geometries that find application as cryptologic keys.
Mellinger presented part of this work as an invited speaker at the 14th annual Discrete Math Days conference in Fort Collins, Colo.
Janusz Konieczny, professor of mathematics, has co-authored a research article, A method for finding new sets of axioms for classes of semigroups, published in the journal Archive for Mathematical Logic.
Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Jangwoon “Leo” Lee, gave a presentation titled “A Stochastic Galerkin Method for Stochastic Control Problems” at the Uncertainty Quantification Conference hosted by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in North Carolina.
On Saturday, March 31, seven regional high schools will compete Jeopardy-style at the Sixth Annual University of Mary Washington High School Calculus Tournament. This year, the tournament will feature 10 high school teams, with a total of 38 students competing. About 10 UMW students will help run the competition.
Last year, the “Ubiquitous C’s” from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Va., ranked first, and Paul VI student Matt Whitlock earned the top individual score. High schools expected to attend this year include Orange County, Paul VI, Mountain View in Stafford County, Riverbend in Spotsylvania County, Fredericksburg Academy, Fredericksburg Christian and the regional Commonwealth Governor’s School. More than $1,000 worth of prizes will be awarded to the student winners as well as the schools represented by the top two teams.
The event will be held in Trinkle Hall on the Fredericksburg campus beginning at 8:30 a.m. The final round will take place at approximately 2:15 p.m. This year, the event is sponsored by GEICO, SimVentions Corporation, HDT Global and Texas Instruments.
