Middle East Report Published Al-Tikriti Article on Battle of Mosul

On June 18, 2018, the Middle East Report (MER) published an article Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies Nabil Al-Tikriti submitted, entitled “Civilians in Mosul’s Battle of Annihilation.” This article was partially informed by Prof. Al-Tikriti’s service as MSF / Doctors Without Borders USA Vice-President in 2016-17, when he attended presentations on violence and participants’ conduct during the 2016-2017 Battle of Mosul.

Article Abstract: “Understanding the course of events and identifying the participants in the battle of Mosul is a difficult task. What is certain is that all parties neglected the fate of civilians and were unable to provide proper emergency medical relief. An examination of the battle is crucial to understanding the evolution of international humanitarian law in conflict zones. ”

Journalists to Discuss Middle East Affairs at UMW

Journalists Jennifer Griffin of Fox News and Greg Myre of National Public Radio will speak at the University of Mary Washington on Thursday, April 9 about current developments and the state of affairs in the Middle East.

The presentation, What’s Coming Next in the Middle East, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Rappahannock Grand Ballroom at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center, 1119 Hanover St. The event is free and open to the public.

The married couple will focus on the effects of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, in addition to discussing Afghanistan, Libya, the Israeli election and how developments in the region could impact the future of the Middle East.

Griffin and Myre met in 1989 while covering a rally staged by Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress at a soccer stadium in Soweto, South Africa. They would later report on Mandela’s release from prison and cover the last years of the apartheid.

The two began to cover Afghanistan in the early ‘90s, and were some of the first people to interview members of the Taliban in Kabul. They had traveled to more than 50 countries and reported on a dozen wars before moving to Washington, D.C. in 2007.

Griffin is currently the national security correspondent for Fox based at the Pentagon. Just last month, Griffin was given the journalism award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for her distinguished coverage of the military.

Myre is the international editor for NPR.org, covering global affairs and working closely with NPR’s 20 foreign correspondents around the world. Before joining NPR in 2008, he was a foreign correspondent with the New York Times and The Associated Press for 20 years.

Griffin and Myre will be selling and signing copies of their book, “This Burning Land.”

Al-Tikriti Lectures on Ottoman Intellectual and Maritime History

On Nov. 14, Associate Professor of Middle East History Nabil Al-Tikriti presented a lecture entitled “Ottoman and Safavid Religious Identities of the 16th Century” to the Philosophy Department at Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas. In the course of this lecture, Al-Tikriti outlined the effects of the Safavid rise to power on religious identities in both Iran and the Ottoman Empire, as well as its longer term legacies on sectarianism in the Middle East. In addition, he drew parallels with developments which shaped Europe during the same period, pointing out that widely recognized trends experienced during the “Age of Reformation” took place well beyond the regions covered in most Western Civilization textbooks.

On Nov. 15, Al-Tikriti offered the keynote lecture for the Texas State University Phi Alpha Theta Graduate History Conference. During this lecture, entitled “Warrior Knights and Sea Ghazis in an Age of Empire,” Al-Tikriti criticized the narrative of most Western Civilizationtextbooks, which ignores what McGill University’s Professor Giancarlo Casale has referred to as the “Ottoman Age of Exploration.” In doing so, he first described Ottoman patronage of “sea ghazi” activities in the Mediterranean, particularly against the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. He then elaborated on the Ottomans’ “pivot to Asia,” whereby the imperial strategy shifted focus towards the Indian Ocean, where they successfully engaged with the rival Portuguese. Al-Tikriti thanks his colleagues at Texas State University for making this engaging and productive visit possible.

Nabil Al-Tikriti Presents Great Lives Lecture

Nabil Al-Tikriti Participates in Tokyo and Amman NGO Conferences

In his capacity as a board member of the United States section of  MSF/Doctors Without Borders, Nabil Al-Tikriti, associate professor of history and American studies, participated in the annual MSF Japan General Assembly in Tokyo on March 24 and 25. Following that, he participated in the annual Field Associative Debate (FAD) for MSF staff serving in Jordan and Iraq, in Amman on March 28 through 29.
