In what has become an annual collaboration with Friends of the Rappahannock through their Trees for Schools grant program, the UMW Landscape and Grounds department received 27 trees to plant on campus, in addition to the 25 that they planted last year. These trees are timely gifts to replace and supplement our campus tree canopy after several years of storm damage and construction loss.
Members of the Grounds crew partnered with UMW’s COAR office to rally student volunteers to join in on this fun, hands-on campus beautification project. But more than beauty, planting these trees assists UMW in maintaining our Tree Campus Higher Education designation through the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Several varieties of cherries, as well as Linden, Nuttall’s oak, ginkgo, birch and hawthorn planted by students will become a legacy that future students, wildlife and the community will enjoy.
Funding for this project provided by the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. These institutions are equal opportunity providers.
