Leadership Colloquium at UMW Networking Event, May 15

The Leadership Colloquium @ UMW Team has been busy making plans to give you ways to connect between November events!

Please join us at our next Quarterly Networking Event on Thursday, May 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevenson Ridge, 6901 Meeting Street, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553. The screening of Sheryl Sandberg’s TED Talk on “Lean In” will be presented, followed by a brief discussion and networking. The cost is $10 and includes spirits and appetizers. The Leadership Colloquium at UMW participated in a Women Build on Saturday, May 3 to kick off Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week. This national initiative occurs annually and will take place from May 3 -11. Now in its seventh year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing or complete beautification projects in their local communities. The week also focuses on the homeownership challenges faced by women.

The UMW group teamed together with employees from the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity to complete projects on a Stafford, VA home. Participants from UMW included: Andrea Cordray, Christina Eggenberger, Melissa Myers, Mary Parnell, Megan Petter, Lynne Richardson, Beth Searcy, Anika Wilson, and Aries Wilson. Colloquium advisory board members Lynn Pates and Jo Ellen Armstrong also participated in the build.

The Leadership Colloquium at UMW’s mission is to create a network and relevant learning environment to inspire women for a lifetime of leadership. Quarterly events and volunteer opportunities attract managers, administrators, educators, business owners and leaders of public, private and nonprofit organizations.

Worldwide Film Marketing with Dan Wolfe ’84, April 17

The College of Business will welcome Dan Wolfe ’84, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Creative Operations at NBC Universal, for a presentation on Worldwide Film Marketing in 2014.

Wolfe will cover topics relevant in the film industry to include modernizing a tired brand, the still developing international marketplace,  new challenges and threats to the film business, the Fast & Furious franchise, and changing consumer consumption.

Xiaofeng Zhao’s Article Accepted for Publication

Associate Professor in the College of Business, Dr. Xiaofeng Zhao’s article, “Nonlinear Programming,” has been accepted by the Encyclopedia of Business Analytics and Optimization (EBAO). The article will be published by IGI Global in 2014. Another article by Dr. Zhao, “Linear Programming,” will also be published in EBAO.

Michael Lapke’s Article Accepted for Publication

Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business, Dr. Michael Lapke’s article “The Evolution of Cyber Security Policy in the United States” has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Information Systems Security.  The article was co-authored with Ramesh Subramanian.

iCenter with Sameer Shalaby: Resumes Jan. 27

It’s not easy to build a company! Sameer Shalaby, founder of Cogency Software and Paladyne Systems, is a retired entrepreneur who wants to help UMW students take their business ideas from inception to a real business.

Shalaby will join students in the Simpson Library ThinkLab each Monday from 3 -5 p.m., starting Jan. 27,  for the iCenter. It will offer mentors, speakers, networking events, quarterly seminars, business plan reviews, and more.

The iCenter encourages ideas, innovation and incubation – and provides aspiring entrepreneurs with a place to share ideas and gather helpful feedback.

Each weekly session is free and open to all UMW students.

Richardson Recognized as CRJ Outstanding Reviewer

The Case Research Journal (CRJ) recognized Woody Richardson, Associate Professor in the College of Business, as “CRJ Outstanding Reviewer for 2012-2013” at the annual meeting of the North American Case Research Association meeting held in Victoria, BC, Canada on Oct. 17-19, 2013.

The CRJ is the leading academic journal for cases in business and related disciplines in North America.  In bestowing the honor, the CRJ recognized Woody for providing authors with timely, superior reviews and for his selfless commitment to provide endless hours commenting on cases to make them better.
