Excellent Eagle Employee Button Campaign
Beginning Monday, October 1, the Staff Advisory Council will launch the Excellent Eagle Employee (EEE) campaign campus-wide, to include Fredericksburg, Stafford and Dahlgren campuses.
The Button Campaign works like this:
Each S.A.C. member receives one EEE button at the September 24 meeting, which is open to the UMW community.
When an S.A.C. member spots any UMW employee doing something exceptional and beyond their regular duties – picking up trash, directing a visitor, helping a student, etc. – they award the EEE button to that employee. The Excellent Eagle Employee may then wear the button and then redeem it at Seacobeck for a free lunch.
The S.A.C.’s hope is that this campaign will not only broaden the awareness of the council, but will foster a sense of pride and recognition of the dedication and spirit of the UMW community.
Don’t forget to nominate a colleague for the ongoing Excellent Eagle Employee parking spot, too! To nominate someone who you believe is an Excellent Eagle Employee, just send an email to Priscilla Sullivan (psulliva@umw.edu) with Excellent Eagle Employee in the subject line. In your email, be sure to give the person’s name, department, work location (with the most convenient parking lot), and of course, the reason why you believe they should be recognized. Please spread the word to other employees about this wonderful opportunity to recognize a co-worker(s).

UMW Faculty and Staff Donate to Local School
University of Mary Washington’s Staff Advisory Council held a school supply drive to benefit Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School in North Stafford.

The drive was an ongoing event that took place during the month of August. Donation boxes were located in university buildings at both the Fredericksburg and Stafford campuses.
Donations included pencils, notebook paper, glue sticks, folders, rulers, and other supplies for teachers and students.
S.A.C. Activities Committee Chair, Priscilla Sullivan, organized the event.
She said the event was, “beyond my expectation. There were almost 30 boxes of supplies.”
Sullivan noted that because so many items were collected, it was difficult to find room in the van for everything on the day they delivered the supplies.
As Stafford County classes started on Tuesday, September 4, teachers at Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School were thrilled by the donations.
Ellen Church, a third grade teacher who received supplies from the donation, said, “It does indeed save me money as well as my students and their families.”
Charles Tate of the admissions department was one of the many UMW staff members who donated supplies.
He said the drive, in addition to aiding the elementary school, helped to “boost morale and foster collaboration” among faculty and staff in Lee Hall. Tate also said the supply drive was a good way to get to know other departments at UMW.
Because of the drive’s success, Sullivan plans to conduct another drive in January, when classroom supplies start to run low again.
“Maybe we’ll do a whole school zone,” said Sullivan, who plans to expand the drive to include more elementary schools.
In addition to the school supplies drive, Sullivan is planning a food drive this fall and will work on a toy drive with UMW’s Community Outreach and Resources in December.
Two UMW Exhibitions Open 9/7
The University of Mary Washington Galleries will host “Mapping Nowhere: Rosemary Kate Jesionowski” at the duPont Gallery and “Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts” at the Ridderhof Martin Gallery from Friday, September 7 through Friday, October 5.

The opening receptions for both exhibitions will be held Thursday, September 6 from 5 to 7 p.m., with the reception for “Mapping Nowhere” in the duPont Gallery and the reception for “Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts” in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery. Eric Standley, associate professor of studio art at Virginia Tech, will present the talk “Process and Paradox” on Sunday, September 23 in conjunction with the “Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts” exhibit. The lecture begins at 2 p.m. in Combs Hall, Room 139. Admission is free to the talks, receptions and exhibitions.
“Mapping Nowhere” features the work of faculty member Rosemary Jesionowski, assistant professor in multiple imaging and an accomplished artist and member of the Richmond art community. The exhibit is an investigation of place, land and how we identify ourselves through location. Jesionowski’s images simultaneously reference her experience of place and her investigation of the relationship between people and place.
“Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts” includes the work of eight artists whose practice involves the use of forms and/or materials traditionally associated with decorative arts objects and ornamentation. Taking inspiration from traditional and historical precedents, artists Angelo Arnold, Barrett Hanrahan, Molly Hatch, Kevin Quale, Alexander Rosenberg, Maura Schaffer, Romy Scheroder and Eric Standley transform, manipulate and otherwise reinvent the existing vocabulary into a new language rich with layers of meaning.
