Philosophical Conundrum: Is President Trump Really to Blame for Charlottesville? (The Novice Journalist)
A message from the President
Dear colleagues,
Like you, I have followed the weekend’s news from Charlottesville with a mix of sorrow and anger. Add my voice to the chorus of those from around the country who have denounced the hatred, bigotry, racism, and senseless acts of violence visited upon Charlottesville.
The acts of these white supremacists remind us of the important work we must continue to do to build and sustain a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming campus community. Our country needs us to succeed in this work now more than ever. A commitment to diversity and inclusion is fundamental to our academic mission and public purpose to build a culture of broadly-based civic engagement.
Please join me at the all-university assembly in Dodd Auditorium on Thursday at 10 a.m. so we can discuss UMW’s vision on how we are going to do this important work with determination and courage at a critical time in our nation’s history.
Sincerely,
Troy D. Paino
President
Annual Coleman, Hurley, Atkins Award Nominations
It’s that time of year again. Time to submit nominations for three of our University Recognition Awards.
We will continue our celebration of excellence with the announcement of this year’s nominees, their champions and the award recipients at the fall staff luncheon event on October 17.
- Charles Coleman Memorial Service Award (supervisor nominations only): Charles Coleman was an employee of 29 years who demonstrated pride, dedication, and loyalty throughout his many years of service. This award was established in honor of his memory and exemplary service. All classified and hourly employees with at least five years of continuous employment are eligible for the award. Nomination submissions are due by noon on September 5, 2017
- Richard V. and Rosemary A. Hurley Presidential Commendation (nominate a colleague): The intent of this award is to honor Mr. and Mrs. Hurley, who have consistently demonstrated a desire to recognize and reward outstanding service of University employees, and who have led by example in their work at Mary Washington. The benefactors of the award, Elmer and Marceline Weatherly Morris, Class of 1950, hope this commendation will serve as a permanent reminder of the appreciation that the Mary Washington community feels for the Hurleys’ service and desire for it to be a source of inspiration for future members of the University’s staff to serve the institution in the dedicated manner epitomized by the Hurleys. UMW employees, with preference for an administrative/professional faculty member, are eligible for the award. Nomination submissions are due by noon on September 5, 2017.
- Larry Atkins Award: This award recognizes UMW employees who are unsung heroes in our offices, lend a helping hand to their teammates, go above and beyond in each and every task, and set a positive example for others. Employees can be honored by their teammates and coworkers, and the winners will receive $100. Partial Sidewalk Closure along College Avenue
The following message is from Facilities Services:
A portion of sidewalk along College Avenue will be closed to pedestrian traffic between Dandridge and Payne streets beginning Wednesday, August 9, and will remain closed for approximately two weeks. Pedestrian traffic will be rerouted across College Avenue via existing crosswalks during this time. The sidewalk closure is required to permit the entrance construction to the new parking lot in the vicinity of Custis Hall.
We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. For questions, please contact John Wiltenmuth, associate vice president for Facilities Services at jwiltenm@umw.edu or 540-654-2080.
