This past Sunday evening, I had the occasion to join with faculty, staff and students in welcoming the 2013 incoming class at the Eagle Gathering ceremony in Ball Circle.  As I said then, the values of diversity and inclusion touch me personally and serve as the core values which define my administration.  These values are central to achieving the dream so beautifully given voice 50 years ago this week.  Reverend Martin Luther King’s dream of a more diverse and inclusive human condition is one that we work to achieve each and every day at the University of Mary Washington.

Recently, UMW students, faculty and staff lent their own voices to an oral interpretation of King’s immortal words.  A video montage of their readings will be seen across campus on monitors and by visiting https://vimeo.com/73235599.   Please join me in reflecting on the words spoken 50 years ago by Dr. King.  At 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, the bells of the Chappell Campanile will ring, joining in a worldwide symphony marking the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.  I invite you to join individuals around the world who will celebrate this momentous occasion by taking a minute to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought then, and those who continue to fight for social justice.

Greetings UMW Community!

As we begin the 2013-2014 academic year, the office of Parking Management extends a warm welcome to faculty, staff and students. We wish to share some basic rules of the road for a smooth opening of the school year. The Parking Management Office is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient use of parking resources.

Under the umbrella of Business Services, our parking management team includes: Robin Jones, Supervisor, Mark Graziano and William Barnett.

Parking on Campus

Vehicles parked on campus must display a valid decal or temporary dash pass and be parked in a lot that corresponds with the decal designation. Reserved spaces and restricted lots are enforced at all times. College Avenue parking is available for commuters, faculty and staff with appropriate decals as well as University visitors. The parking website offers guidance on seeking a “parking pass” for overnight campus guests.

Permits: Parking permit applications are available for eligible students and all faculty and staff through EagleNet.

Parking Lot Designation:  A listing of all lots and their designation may be found on the Parking website (includes guidelines for the UMW Parking Deck)

Note changes for the 2013-14 academic year:

The new and improved Pizza Hut Lot # 35 is designated as “ALL UMW Student Decal Only” parking.

The Thornton Lots #28 & #29 are designated “Fac/Staff Only” parking.

Battlefield Lot #33 is now open to all UMW registered vehicles and visitors.

Due to construction of the Campus Center, there will be some disruption to Commuter/Fac/Staff parking along College Avenue. In anticipation of these disruptions we have added 35 additional commuter parking spaces in the William Street lot

Eagle Landing Parking   Residents of Eagle Landing with a vehicle on campus will receive RFID tags from the EL front desk. These students have 24/7 access to the enclosed deck parking on floors 3-5 of Eagle Landing. Eagle Landing guest spaces are for registered guests with guest passes available from UMW Parking Management and the UMW Police Department.

EAGLE VILLAGE is private property and parking is for tenants and customers of Eagle Village businesses only. Towing in these locations is enforced.

Parking in nearby Commercial & Residential areas  Students and faculty/staff members are cautioned not to park their vehicles in nearby commercial parking lots or residential communities while on campus. The City of Fredericksburg and Commercial Businesses restrict parking to patrons or residents within designated city blocks. Violators are subject to fines and towing.

Construction Detours  The Convergence Center construction continues and details on the project may be found on the Provost website: http://provost.umw.edu/convergence-center. Construction parking will be within a designated area in the Sunken Road Lot. Enforcement  To ensure the availability of safe parking and the efficient use of the parking resources, regulations will be enforced beginning Wednesday, August 28, 2013, on a year round schedule. The university has been granted the authority under the Code of Virginia Sections 23-9.2:3, and 2.2-4800 to issue citations and collect fines.
