The 2014-2015 Dorsey Scholars

Paul R. Judy and Mary Ann Dorsey Judy ’54 visited campus in early April to catch up with the Dorsey Scholars and to inform President Hurley of their $150,000 Mary Washington First Campaign gift.

This new Campaign gift will enhance the Dorsey Scholars Program, which the Judys established in 2008 with an initial gift of $1.1 million. Professor Venitta McCall serves as the program mentor and meets regularly with the nine 2014-2015 Dorsey Scholars to provide guidance for their projects and community service work.

In making this new campaign gift, the Judys wrote, “We are expressing our special pleasure in how the Dorsey Scholars Program is being administered and mentored. It is our impression … that the diverse, cohort approach, along with the superb mentoring, is having a very positive and probably memorable effect on the scholars’ UMW experience.”

The Dorsey Scholars program benefits selected full-time undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, and geography.

Scholarships are one of the seven priorities of the $50-million Mary Washington First Campaign. The comprehensive fundraising initiative began July 1, 2011, went public April 26, 2014, and is expected to conclude June 30, 2016. UMW Receives $1.25 Million Campaign Gift for Amphitheater

A $1.25 million pledge from an alumna and her husband has moved the University closer to the $3-million fundraising goal to restore its historic amphitheater.

The pledge, made by Josephine McPherson Heslep ’56 and her husband, Donald, of Richmond, Va., helps provide a total of $2.5 million toward the only capital project in the Mary Washington First Campaign. The amount raised includes a $1 million pledge from Robert and Alice Andrews Jepson ’64 of Savannah, Ga., and more than $250,000 in gifts and pledges from other alumni and friends.

“We still need to raise another half a million for the project,” says UMW President Richard V. Hurley, “but with the tremendous amount of nostalgia and pride our alumni feel for the amphitheater, we’re confident we will reach the final goal soon.”

For more than a century, the open-air amphitheater has been an integral part of the Mary Washington experience. Located in the grove behind Lee and Trinkle halls, it was the venue of choice for commencements, May Day celebrations, plays, concerts and even weddings. With age and recent storm damage, however, the site has been declared a safety hazard.

“I remember the amphitheater from my time as a student,” says Josephine Heslep. “We’re happy to offer our help so that once again it will be a great gathering place and performance venue.”

In past years, the Hesleps have provided significant support to the UMW Philharmonic. They also are members of the UMW President’s Council, Washington Society and Heritage Society.

When complete, the $3-million restoration will return the amphitheater to its 1952-1953 appearance by repairing and reconstructing damaged and missing pieces, and returning the surrounding woodlands to pristine condition. It also will provide seating for approximately 600 people on weather-resilient benches and chairs.

The amphitheater is one of seven priorities of the $50-million Mary Washington First Campaign. The comprehensive fundraising initiative began July 1, 2011, went public April 26, 2014, and is expected to conclude June 30, 2016. UMW honored two members of the Mary Washington community during a dedication ceremony for the President’s Box held Nov. 15, 2014, at the Anderson Center. Paul A. Dresser Jr. and his wife Julie W. Baxter of Williamsburg, Virginia, were recognized for inspiring, supporting, and advancing UMW students and programs through service and giving.

Paul’s involvement with Mary Washington began in the early 1990s as the parent of an enrolled student. He served on the Mary Washington Board of Visitors from 1992 to 2000, including two years as Vice Rector and four years as Rector. He then served on the UMW Foundation Board of Directors from 2001 to 2014, leading as Chair of both the Audit Committee and the Investment Committee.

In addition to his dedicated work on the BOV and the UMW Foundation Board, Paul and his family are supporters of the Fund for Mary Washington, members of the UMW Heritage Society, and donors to multiple Dresser family scholarships.

In support of the Mary Washington First Campaign, Paul recently endowed the Julie Baxter Scholarship for BSN Completion and also specified the amount of his estate pledge to enhance endowment levels of other Dresser scholarships.
