Moon Discusses Alexandria Neighborhood in The Washington Post

Professor of History and Director of American Studies Krystyn Moon

Professor of History and Director of American Studies Krystyn Moon offered comments to The Washington Post on Lenox Place, a quiet townhome community in Alexandria’s Arlandia neighborhood, close to where Amazon’s second headquarters is being built in Crystal City. Past president of the Alexandria Historical Society, Moon has written papers on Alexandria history and participated in an event entitled, “From Arlandria to Chirilagua: The Remaking of a Northern Virginia Neighborhood, 1960s- 1980s,” as part of Episcopal High School’s community engagement program.

But not all Arlandrians are as receptive to their new neighbors. Known as “Chirilagua” after a town in El Salvador, Arlandria is a diverse community with a sizable Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Honduran and Mexican population. “It is like the world in microcosm,” said Krystyn Moon, professor of history and American studies at University of Mary Washington. New Process for Records Destruction at UMW

Effective Nov. 16, 2020, all public records destruction at UMW must be documented using the new online form, the eRM-3, created by the Library of Virginia. This form replaces current Word and PDF versions, and those versions will no longer be accepted.

Please keep an eye on University Records Management’s eRM-3 page for instructions, tutorials, and videos to help you transition to the new process. Feel free to contact Sarah Appleby, Records Coordinator, at sappleby@umw.edu with any questions.

As a reminder to all records custodians across UMW, as a state agency we have legal and practical responsibilities to create, manage, and ultimately dispose of records according to established retention and disposition policies. University Records Management is available to answer your questions about these policies and offer guidance for the handling of your records through their life cycle.

Scheduled Steam Outage Friday 12/18/20

There will be a steam outage for about 10 hours on Friday, December 18, in order to tie in a new steam line from Willard to Virginia Hall. In the event of any unforeseen issues, the back-up date for the steam outage is Saturday, December 19. (The outage will be from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.) The affected buildings should be at normal temperature Friday morning, although the buildings will become increasingly colder as the day progresses.

The steam outage will impact heat and hot water in the following buildings:

DURING the last decade or so, we have been made aware of the disparities between men and women in senior roles in organizations. We have also read many articles and shared anecdotes about how men and women manage and lead differently. And who can forget “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” to explain differences between the genders?

The status quo has been challenged over and over. But we still have work to do.

For example, a female friend in a senior role at another university shared a story with me. Susan served as a reference for another woman. That woman, let’s call her Dana, was a finalist for a senior position at another university. Susan received the reference call from a man named Dave. During the call, Dave asked many of the standard reference check questions and Susan ably responded. And then Dave asked, “Do you think Dana comes across as very likeable?” Susan replied, “Well, what exactly do you mean? Read more.

University of Mary Washington Museums Temporarily Closing

Gari Melchers Home and Studio and the James Monroe Museum will close to the public beginning Monday, November 23, 2020, and remain closed until Monday, January 4, 2021. This corresponds to the time period during which most University of Mary Washington facilities will be closed or operating with limited public access.

The Stafford County Tourist Information Center, administered by Gari Melchers Home and Studio, will also be closed to the public during this period. For information on Stafford County attractions, please visit https://www.tourstaffordva.com/.

The temporary closing is a precautionary measure taken in response to actual and potential increases in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Virginia and nationally, especially during the forthcoming holidays. Prior to January 4, University Museums leadership, in conjunction with the UMW administration, will decide whether remaining closed beyond January 4 is warranted. Such decisions will be closely aligned with the general public health situation, including any applicable local, state, or federal directives.

Take a Survey for Bike FXBG

Bike FXBG is a student-built project that is working with a local organization, Fredericksburg Main Street, to place bike infrastructure downtown. Bike infrastructure includes racks, corrals, and shelters; these structures target and help cyclists directly but benefit pedestrians and drivers as well. As UMW students and members of the Fredericksburg community, we would like your input, which you can give us by taking a two-minute survey on the bikefxbg.org website. While there, you can learn more about bike infrastructure, drop a pin on an interactive GIS map, and meet the team.

Commendation for UMW Police Officer Michael Jackson

I’d like to thank Officer Michael Jackson for being so sweet, kind and helpful on 11/09/20. I sprained my ankle and was on crutches so my whole morning had been a struggle to gather my things and ambulate. When I arrived on campus for my scheduled shift with BetterMed, Officer Michael so kindly helped me carry my things inside and made sure I got into the building safely. His professionalism and willingness to help without any hesitation truly helped turn my hectic morning around and ease my stress. This was my first interaction/experience with UMW Police and Officer Michael left a very good impression of the department as a whole.

Open and Affordable Textbooks

The impact of COVID-19 demonstrated the importance of having consistent, online access to course materials. As faculty select course materials for the Spring semester, please consider searching the VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal to identify no-cost, online alternatives to print textbooks.  The Portal contains over 200,000 titles from the Virtual Library of Virginia’s (VIVA’s) shared library collections, open access textbooks, and e-books available to UMW at no-cost.  For more information, please contact Paul Boger, the Scholarly Communications Librarian at pboger@umw.edu.
