The Annual Appreciation lunch for our Administrative Support Professionals will be on Friday, April 26, this year.
We would like to recognize the exceptional work and dedication that our administrative support professionals — administrative assistants, office managers, general administrative coordinators 1 or 2, and administrative office specialists — give daily. The University will provide a complimentary lunch for our administrative support professionals, on Friday, April 26, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Dining Room of the University Center (on the pizza and pasta side of the dining room). Admissions open house this Friday
The following message is from the Office of Admissions.
To the UMW Community:
On Friday, April 19, 2019, the University of Mary Washington will host its UMW Admissions Open House. About 300 prospective students (typically transfers and high school seniors, juniors, and sophomores) and their families will visit campus between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The estimated guest count is over 900 visitors.
A sample agenda is posted here. Visitor parking has been reserved in parking deck level 4 off of Route 1, along College Avenue, general visitor parking spaces on Double Drive, and Admissions visitor parking spaces on Double Drive. Primary event locations are the Anderson Center, Lee Hall, the Hurley Convergence Center, the University Center, and campus/residence hall tours in Mason. Expect to see increased foot traffic on campus and curious newcomers at the Top of the University Center (fourth floor), especially between noon and 2 p.m.
While the Office of Admissions sponsors these events, the entire campus assumes the role of host. Our visitors frequently comment on how “friendly, helpful, and engaging” our UMW community is.

Volunteers Needed for Exam Cram Breakfast
Campus Dining will be hosting “Exam Cram,” a free late-night breakfast for all UMW students on Monday, April 29th from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Over 700 students are expected to attend and volunteer servers are greatly needed. The event is very casual and lots of fun. Volunteers get free breakfast, too!
Volunteers are asked to arrive at 9:45 p.m. and serve until about 11 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should contact Rose Benedict at rbenedic@umw.edu or 540-654-2169.
Commencement Day Dining
Breakfast Options: On Commencement day (Saturday, May 11), Campus Dining will be offering “Grab & Go” breakfast items from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Qdoba dining area of the University Center. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and bottled water, juice and sodas will be available along with bagels, pastries, muffins, hot breakfast sandwiches and other snacks.
There will be four serving lines to help expedite service: (1) Express Drinks Line, accepting cash payments only; (2) Express Drinks and Pastry Line, accepting cash payments only; (3) Full menu accepting cash and credit; and (4) Full menu plus smoothies, accepting cash and credit.
Commencement Luncheon: A buffet lunch featuring hot Southern Fried Chicken, Mac & Cheese, a Vegetable & Quinoa Casserole, plus a variety of salads and desserts will be served from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Chandler Ballroom of the University Center. Members of the UMW faculty and staff who have received e-mail tickets are asked to bring print-outs of the tickets with them to the luncheon. If you do not have a hard copy of your ticket you will be asked to show your e-mail on your smart phone to the buffet hosts.
Anyone wishing to bring friends or family members to the luncheon will need to purchase tickets for them at the “Will Call” desk located in the second floor lobby of the University Center. Tickets will be available for purchase on Saturday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at a cost of $13.75 plus tax for adults and $7.50 plus tax for children aged eleven or under. Office Sustainability Tip of the Week
Have you ever thought about if the coffee pods you may use in the office are compostable? Many of them are not and therefore wind up creating massive amounts of plastic waste each year. Last year, enough k-cups were sold that if they were placed end-to-end, they would circle the globe 10.5 times — that is a lot of plastic waste! (Source: https://tinyurl.com/y9vd8g99). The President’s Council on Sustainability recently spoke with representatives from Tayst Coffee Company which offers 100% compostable coffee pods that can be delivered right to your office. You can also use them at home as well. If the amount of plastic waste generated by non-recyclable or non-compostable coffee pods is something that weighs on your mind, we recommend checking out Tayst or looking into other companies that may offer coffee pods that can be recycled or composted.

DMV Connect — Bringing the DMV to You on Monday, April 15!
Staff from the DMV will be coming to campus on Monday, April 15 from 10am-3pm in the University Center Colonnade Room. Why go to the DMV off-campus and wait in line when you can get everything done on campus?

Upcoming Training on the new MyUMW Software
You’re invited to attend any of the upcoming trainings to learn about the new MyUMW software, Presence. These informal training opportunities are open to all students and staff who would like a tutorial on how to use the new software, particularly if you are a portal administrator.
All trainings will take place in the SAE Conference Room (located in Suite 303 on the 3rd floor of the University Center) and you are encouraged to bring a laptop.
