The following message is from the Office of Residence Life: 

The University of Mary Washington is co-sponsoring a campus sustainability event to encourage faculty, staff and students to donate old or unwanted clothing and household items.  “Drop ‘N Go!” a collaboration with the Rappahannock Goodwill Industries (RGI), will begin Thursday, April 25, and will continue through Saturday, May 4.  Bins for the donations will be provided in all residence hall lobbies, Seacobeck Hall, the Fitness Center, Facilities Services, and in Lee Hall.

The following message is from the Orientation Planning Committee: 

Dear UMW Faculty and Staff: 

As you are aware, in June 2013 UMW will host New Student Orientation for all incoming students. In planning for this program, the Orientation Planning Committee is looking for faculty and staff to assist with various roles and activities. The committee is asking for volunteers from all UMW Faculty and Staff to help partner with students and their guests as they transition to UMW. 

New Student Orientation starts on Friday, June 14, with Transfer Student Orientation  scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting on June 17, there will be six sessions for first-year students, each session lasting 1.5 days. A second Transfer Orientation is scheduled for Friday, June 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Listed below are the dates for the six First-Year Sessions:   

Session #1: June 17 & 18
Session #2: June 18 & 19
Session #3: June 19 & 20
Session #4: June 24 & 25
Session #5: June 25 & 26
Session #6: June 26 & 27 

Below are descriptions of each of the activities for which we need support, and approximate times are indicated. 

Description of Roles:

1)  Parking – assist with parking and directions for guests. Parking duties will start at 7 a.m. and conclude around 9:30 a.m. . 

2)  Greeters – talk with students and their guests and direct to programming as needed, stationed at various locations.

3)  Information Desk – there will be an information desk in Lee Hall throughout orientation, and assistants are needed.

4)  Family/Guest Reception – representatives from various offices are needed to interact with families and guests during a dessert social from 6-7 p.m. on Day 1 of First-Year Orientation.

The following message is from Facilities Services: 

On Thursday, April 25, starting at 5 a.m., the construction firm will be placing the last of the major Convergence Center concrete pours.  To accomplish this they will need to use the Simpson parking lot as a place to stage concrete trucks waiting their turn at the pump truck. 

For safety purposes the Simpson Library parking lot will be completely closed during the work to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  Pedestrians moving from the north end to the center of campus will be detoured to either College Ave. or through the Pollard and Melchers arcades and around the front of DuPont Hall.  

The Library will remain open and accessible via Campus walk entrance (the front door.)  As soon as the concrete pour is complete, the parking lot and the pedestrian crosswalk will be re-opened for normal use.

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students: 

The revised Draft of the University Master Plan is now available for review and comment on the UMW webpage http://president.umw.edu/masterplan/. 

In 2011, the UMW Master Plan Steering Committee presented a Draft Campus Master Plan to the University Community for comment and feedback.  As many of you will recall, the Plan was the culmination of more than a year’s work conducting studies of buildings, landscape and infrastructure, researching trends in higher education, interviewing stakeholders, and analyzing data.  One of the most commonly voiced comments and concerns regarding the Plan had to do with proposals to consider razing several buildings.   

In response to those comments, the University asked its nationally known Historic Preservation Department to develop a University-wide, comprehensive Preservation Plan as part of the Master Plan. The Preservation Plan is not complete at this time however an example of the approach being taken has been included  (Willard Hall). The entire Preservation Plan is estimated to be completed by September 2013. 

The Master Plan is just that – a plan.  It is not etched in stone, will likely change in response to varying conditions and demands and most importantly, will be informed by the Preservation Plan.  All upgrades, repairs, renovations and construction impacting buildings or landscape features will look to the Preservation Plan before reaching the drawing board.  While the Plan contains renderings of several new buildings to replace current ones, if the Preservation Plan indicates the need for a historically correct renovation, that will be strongly considered.
