Miriam Liss, Holly Schiffrin Co-Author Book

Miriam Liss, professor of psychology, and Holly Schiffrin, associate professor of psychology, are co-authors of a book “Balancing the Big Stuff: Finding Happiness in Work, Family, and Life.” published this month by Rowman & Littlefield.

Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of “The Myths of Happiness” and “The How of Happiness” writes about the work:

“It’s rare that I read a book and wish that I had written it. Liss and Schiffrin have penned the definitive book on work-life balance—an elegant blend of engaging stories, illuminating examples, and cutting-edge empirical evidence. If you read Lean In and want to dig deeper into the complex terrain of the pitfalls and joys of achieving work-life (or any kind of) balance, this book is for you.

Center for Deployment Psychology Training, Aug. 19

Dear Colleagues,UC4

The University of Mary Washington will host the Center for Deployment Psychology on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 for an interactive training on the topic of increasing our level of awareness, service and collaboration between departments when working with veteran students. We would like to extend an invitation to all faculty, staff and community members who are interested in understanding the concerns, challenges, and experiences of veterans attending college. Although this training targets college counseling centers, all faculty and staff who interact and support our student veterans will benefit from the training.

Service members and veterans attending college often face unique clinical and cultural challenges. With focused education on the intersection of military and campus experiences, university and college mental health providers can offer improved care, with greater competency, to military-connected undergraduates.

Curriculum includes interactive, didactic, and workshop components that address multicultural understanding of service members and veterans, campus-specific challenges, deployment cycle stressors, outreach discussion and workshop, and an overview of evidence-based treatment of PTSD appropriate for counseling center work.

6.5 hours of continuing education credits are offered for licensed mental health and behavioral health providers attending the program for a fee of $25 to be paid at the door. Please follow the link below to register for this training:

$1.5 Million Campaign Donor Meets CPR Faculty

UMW June2014-016

Joseph Romero, Angela Pitts, Richard J. Hayes Jr., Liane Houghtalin, and Craig Vasey discussed the classics during lunch at Brompton.

Members of the Classics, Philosophy, and Religion faculty attended a luncheon at Brompton in early June to meet the man behind a $1.5 million campaign pledge. Richard “Rick” J. Hayes Jr., a practicing lawyer in mid-coastal Maine, recently informed UMW of his intent to bequeath $1.5 million for an endowed scholarship in support of Mary Washington students majoring in the classics.

“A college education should open your mind and teach you about some of the greatest thinkers in history, such as Aristotle and Plato. We don’t have to learn from just our experience – we can learn from their experiences as well,” says Rick. “I think a real education in classics and philosophy helps develop a well-rounded, intellectual person who can think and assemble information to be more effective in our complex world today.”

Rick is now “paying it forward” through his generous estate gift, which counts toward the Mary Washington First Campaign. In addition to financial assistance, the Richard J. Hayes Jr. Scholarship will also provide recipients with mentoring and support for success. Each recipient will be asked to sign the Richard J. Hayes Challenge to “pay forward” the benefits they receive through their scholarship by helping others when they are in a position to do so.

The $50-million Mary Washington First Campaign began July 1, 2011, and went public April 26, 2014. As of June 30, 2014, donors have committed $30 million in gifts and pledges. Campaign contributions are actively being solicited for the three colleges, scholarships, the Fund for Mary Washington, program initiatives, and restoration of the amphitheater. The Mary Washington First Campaign is scheduled to conclude June 30, 2016. Visit the campaign website for more information.
