Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently presented a research paper titled “Late Night Comics Examine Campaign 2016: Donald Trump Dominates the Jokes” at the American Political Science Association’s Pre-Conference in Political Communication at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Kraus Performs in Memorial Concerts in Germany
Adjunct Piano Professor Andrew Kraus traveled to the Black Forest region of Germany last week to play in two concerts memorializing his mentor, Peter Feuchtwanger, who died in June.
He closed the evening program on Aug. 31 in the ornately decorated “Baroque Hall” at the Eiztalmuseum in Waldkirch (http://p23515.typo3server.info/) with “Evening Music,” a group of pieces played for a UMW audience in his faculty recital at Dodd Hall last spring. Eighteen pianists in all played in this event. He is shown in the leftmost photo of Row 2 in the attached photo.
Peter Feuchtwanger, 18 Former Students and Audience Members in the Baroque Hall, Eitzal Museum, Waldkirch
Earlier that day, he joined 15 other pianists, also former students of Peter Feuchtwanger, for a performance of Carl Czerny’s transcription of Rossini’s “Overture to Semmiramide” at Piano Haus Lepthein in Freiburg. They played on 8 grand pianos arranged in a semi-circle around the audience. Kraus tells us that a video of the performance has been planned, and he will post about it when complete.
Magrakvelidze Publishes Article in the European Physical Journal D

Al-Tikriti Serves in Iraq and Ethiopia, Leads International Migration Workshop
During this past summer, Associate Professor of History and American Studies Nabil Al-Tikriti carried out several activities while continuing to actively serve as a member of the Board of Directors of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders USA.

For three weeks in May and June, Al-Tikriti assisted MSF’s coordination team in Baghdad, Iraq, during the nearby launching of the Falluja siege and recapture campaign. Before returning to the U.S., he then participated in MSF France’s General Assembly in Paris.
Upon return to the U.S., Al-Tikriti chaired a panel on International Migration which he had earlier assembled and organized for the 2016 MSF USA General Assembly, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Panelists included Apostolos Veizis of MSF Greece, the Istanbul-based immigration rights activist Şenay Özden, MSF USA’s own MaryJo Frawley, and Els Debuf of the International Peace Institute. In the course of this assembly, Al-Tikriti was elected MSF USA’s 2016-2017 Board Vice President by his colleagues on the Board of Directors.
In late June and July, Al-Tikriti conducted an administrative mapping exercise while serving as Country Representative Assistant for a cross-sectional initiative in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During that same period, he met with several colleagues at the University of Addis Ababa’s Department of History.
While completing his MSF reporting in Turkey with his family, Al-Tikriti was interviewed about the post-coup situation in that country by Katrina Dix of The Free Lance-Star, which resulted in the article, “UMW History Professor Caught Up in Turkey Tension,” on July 21, 2016.

Larus Presents Paper in Japan
Elizabeth Freund Larus, Waple Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, presented a paper titled “Alliances and U.S. Sea Power in the Asia-Pacific” at the AAS-in Asia conference, Doshisha University, Kyoto, in June 2016.
Skallerup Bessette Publishes Book on Poet Anne Hébert
Lee Skallerup Bessette, Instructional Technology Specialist in the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies and Adjunct Instructor in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, had her book A Journey in Translation: Anne Hébert’s Poetry in English published by the University of Ottawa Press at the end of August. Gupta Delivers Lecture at Delhi University
Surupa Gupta, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs, delivered a lecture titled “Why Does India Need to WTO” to the faculty of Political Science, Delhi University, during her recent visit to New Delhi.
Davis Publishes Book and Article
Janine S. Davis, assistant professor in the College of Education, has published a text titled Building a Professional Teaching Identity on Social Media: A Digital Constellation of Selves. The text was initiated during her work on the Digital Scholars Institute in 2014-15 and was completed during her Jepson fellowship year in 2015-16. The text features a foreword by Martha Burtis, director of the Digital Knowledge Center. Also in the text are mentions of the Domain of One’s Own project and citations from both an interview with Jeffrey McClurken, professor of History & American Studies and Special Assistant to the Provost for Teaching, Technology, and Innovation, and work by Zach Whalen, associate professor of English.
Davis also published an article with a colleague, Victoria Fantozzi, in the journal Mentoring and Tutoring.
