Business Faculty Publish Article in Health Policy and Technology
Mike Lapke, Dave Henderson and Chris Garcia from the College of Business, recently had their article, “The Disconnect Between Healthcare Provider Tasks and Privacy Requirements,” accepted for publication in Health Policy and Technology.
Haffey Publishes Essay on Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield
Kate Haffey, Assistant Professor of English, recently published “‘People must marry’: Queer Temporality in Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield.” The essay appeared in Woolf and Her Female Contemporaries: Selected Papers from the 25th Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf, edited by Julie Vandivere and Megan Hicks and issued by Clemson University Press.
Farnsworth Publishes Research on Virginia Politics
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently had a co-authored research paper titled “Virginia’s 2013 Gubernatorial Race and Presidential Elections: A Comparison of News Coverage” published in the The Virginia News Letter. Housley Presents Workshop at Conference
Helen Housley, Associate Professor of Theatre, presented a workshop at the annual Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) conference. The workshop, titled “Performing Shakespeare’s Buzz: Lessac’s Tonal NRG and the Shakespearean Actor,” was presented on August 14, 2016, in Chicago.
Snyder Nominated for Grammy Educator Award
Assistant Professor of Music Mark Snyder has been named a quarterfinalist for the 2017 Grammy Educator Award, which is presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. Dr. Snyder is one of 290 quarterfinalists from more than 3,300 nominations.
The Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators (kindergarten through college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. Finalists for the award will be announced in September and the full list of quarterfinalists can be found here.
At the University of Mary Washington, Dr. Snyder teaches Technology for Musicians, the Freshman Seminar Ballades, Beats & Bandcamp, Electronic Music, Audio Recording, Audio Production, Music of Non-Western Cultures, Theory & Skills (1, 2 & 3), MIDI Composition, Great Masterworks, Composition lessons and Orchestration. Since arriving in 2011, he designed the new music curriculum, built the recording studio, the ten seat music production lab and is the creator and director of the Electroacoustic Barn Dance, a three day festival of electronic music and art that brings as many as ninety composers and performers from around the world to campus each year.
Out of the courses Mark has taught at UMW, 47 students have had 85 adjudicated/peer reviewed performances of their works at national conferences in the last four years,119 compositions by 58 UMW composers have been performed 347 times at 124 concerts and 29 UMW student musicians have performed those compositions 194 times at 121 concerts. Highlights have included Austin O’Rourke winning the 2015 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Stephen Hennessey being named a finalist for the 2016 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award and Becky Brown’s Hold Still being selected by adjudication to be on the Society of Electroacoustic Composers in the United States CD that will be released by Naxos, the largest major label for classical music, in 2016.

Johnson-Young Publishes Article
An article by Elizabeth Johnson-Young, assistant professor of communication, has been published in the journal Qualitative Research Reports in Communication. The article, “Help Me Understand What I Can Expect While I’m Expecting: What Women in a Prenatal Yoga Class Communicate About Body Image, Fitness, and Health,” reports the results of pilot study using ethnography and in-depth interviews with women participating in a prenatal yoga class.
The results indicated several themes regarding what characterizes the way women in the prenatal yoga class talk about body image, health, and fitness during pregnancy. These themes include: expressions of body image and fitness as communal, expressions of desire for relationship-building with women in similar situations, expressions of desire to maintain pre-pregnancy fitness, expressions that redefine “fitness” and “health,” expressions of concern about post-pregnancy fitness and weight loss, and expressions of self-consciousness. The article provides practical and theoretical implications for future study.

Gray Authors Article on Metrics
Edward Gray, systems integration and support specialist in UMW’s IT Support Services, has written an article titled “Measuring Success: An Introduction to Metrics” for HDI’s SupportWorld online publication. The article is based on a presentation Gray gave at the HDI Capital Area local chapter meeting in April and that he will present at the Service Management FUSION conference in early November. The article and presentation provide foundational knowledge on the topic of metrics, their definition, selection and use.
Gray has been at UMW for more than 15 years, serving in various IT roles. He earned a master of science degree in Management Information Systems from UMW in 2010. He was a participant in the inaugural cohort of Leadership UMW. He has also earned several technical and management best practice certifications. Farnsworth Lectures at Rappahannock-Fredericksburg Rotary Club
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently delivered a lecture titled “Gerrymandering, Partisan Combat and the Vanishing Moderates in Virginia Politics,” at the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg Rotary Club in Fredericksburg. The talk included findings from the center’s latest UMW survey of Virginians.
