The University of Mary Washington presented its top honors during commencement ceremonies Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.

Civil rights icon John Lewis called on the University of Mary Washington’s class of 2011 to build a better society, urging the graduates to challenge injustices as he delivered the undergraduate commencement address on Saturday, May 7.

Roy M. Gordon will be named Professor Emeritus of Athletics, Health and Physical Education, Lorene C. Nickel will be named Professor Emerita of Art, Joan T. Olson will be named Associate Professor Emerita of Sociology, and John N. Pearce will be named Director of the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, Director of the James Monroe Presidential Center, and University Liaison for the Enchanted Castle Site Emeritus.

University of Mary Washington Assistant Professor of Psychology Virginia Mackintosh says no youngsters are more at risk than the children of incarcerated women. Mackintosh discusses her extensive work with these youth and their mothers during an interview airing on the "With Good Reason" public radio program beginning Saturday, April 30.

Calculus can be fun. At least that is the opinion of Keith Mellinger, chair of the University of Mary Washington’s Department of Mathematics. Mellinger and his colleague Randall Helmstutler recently hosted the university’s fifth annual high school calculus tournament at UMW.
