Qdoba’s Grace Anne Braxton Wins Awards

Grace Anne Braxton, who works as a dining room attendant at Qdoba in the University Center, has won Sodexo’s local, district and regional awards for helping to give guests an outstanding customer experience.

Grace Anne BraxtonGrace Anne’s recognition also came in part due to the wonderful tribute she received from UMW’s basketball team and the excellent article written about her by Esther Salguero in the Blue & Gray Press. She was also recently featured in an article on Fredericksburg Patch.Com (see link below). Please join us in congratulating Grace Anne on receiving this well-earned recognition. Campus Dining and Sodexo are extremely grateful to have Grace Anne as a member of our team. She is warm, kind, thoughtful, hard-working and an overall exceptional human being.

February Excellent Eagle Employee: Congratulations to Evelyn Torres for being selected as the Excellent Eagle for February!  As one of her co-workers explains: “Evelyn demonstrates a genuine interest in the success of the entire UMW community. She provides patient and consistent guidance to students, in order for them to successfully graduate. She solves problems, trains co-workers and assists her department with the same patience and guidance. Evelyn is upbeat, friendly and projects a very positive and welcoming demeanor, all great qualities and demonstrative of an Excellent Eagle Employee!”

February SAC Meeting:  Our February meeting will be held next week on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. in Lee Hall, Room 412.  You do not have to be a member of the SAC to attend!  Attending is a great opportunity to not only meet with other UMW employees but also to observe and discuss important issues on campus.  Dr. William Crawley and Brian Jay Jones of the Great Lives Series will be the February guest speakers.

Safe Zone Training:  The Safe Zone program offers workshops that are designed to educate members of the University community about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) issues to increase the safety and inclusion of all its members. There will be two basic training sessions for any interested faculty or staff member on Tuesday, March 21, from noon to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 12, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.  An advanced training will be offered on Tuesday, April 11, from noon to 2 p.m. Registration is required and space is limited. Please email Laura Wilson at lwilson5@umw.edu to register for one of the training sessions or if you have questions.

Black History Month: Colors of Africa will raise awareness and highlight Caribbean, African and traditionally African American culture through music, dance and food! Sponsored by the African Student Union, Brothers of a  New Direction, Students Educating and Empowering Diversity and Women of Color, this event is free and will take place of the University Center in the Chandler Ballroom at 6 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 10.

Coffee with the President: President Troy Paino will hold his first “Coffee with the President” on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium. Stop by to share your thoughts and ideas about the University.

Hidden Figures: Meet the Author

hidden-figuresThe University Bookstore will be selling books at a “Meet the Author” event sponsored by the Central Rappahannock Regional Library on Saturday, March 4. Margo Lee Shetterly, author of the non-fiction best-seller Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, will speak at 3 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium. Book Club

On February 15, 2017, the UMW Book Club will meet from 12 to 1 p.m. in the University Bookstore to disucss The Interestings, by Meg Wolitzer.

On March 15, 2017, they will meet from 12 to 1 p.m. in the University Bookstore to discuss Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margo Lee Shetterly. The book is available in the Bookstore at a discount for Book Club members.

The “Show George Some Love Sale” will begin on Valentine’s day, and go through President’s day (February 14-20). The Bookstore will offer students, faculty and staff 15% off a single apparel or insignia item.

Textbook Adoptions

Textbook adoption dates are approaching.

Faculty Regalia Rental

Oak Hall is the regalia provider for the University of Mary Washington. Faculty and Staff may rent or purchase academic regalia from the leading custom regalia manufacturer in the country. Beginning February 1, 2017, Faculty and Staff may go online at www.oakhalli.com/UMWfaculty to rent regalia for delivery directly to individual offices. Inclusive Digital Access (IDA) saves UMW students money: $23,425 were saved in two Psychology courses in spring 2017. Each student saved $146 off of traditional course material prices. Mindfulness & Meditation Course Registration Open

Learn the practice of mindfulness in a 6-week course led by Bill Brooks, a certified meditation teacher through the Meditation Teacher Training Institute. This experience is only $15 and participants who attend five or more sessions will receive that money back in the form of a UMW bookstore gift card.

If you are interested, please register online soon. The group will meet on Tuesdays beginning Feb. 21 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Trinkle B-39, the Leidecker Center for Asian Studies. Safe Zone Training

The Safe Zone program offers workshops that are designed to educate members of the University community about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) issues to increase the safety and inclusion of all its members.

Safe Zone consists of people who:

  1. Will be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQ+ individuals need help, advice or just someone to talk to.
  2. Will not tolerate homophobic and heterosexist comments and actions and will address them in an educational and informative manner.
  3. Will have received training and can provide information regarding on- or off-campus resources.

We offer two types of Safe Zone workshops for faculty and staff. The Basic training focuses on terminology, issues related to privilege, increasing awareness and sensitivity, and how to support the LGBTQ+ population on campus. The Advanced training is geared toward faculty and staff who have already completed the Basic training and covers more advanced topics, including bystander intervention.

We are currently accepting enrollment for two Basic training sessions for any interested faculty or staff member on Tuesday, March 21, from noon to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 12, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. We are also offering an Advanced training on Tuesday, April 11, from noon to 2 p.m. Registration is required and space is limited. Green Zone Training Initiative

A “Green Zone” is a location recognized by veterans as a safe place. Student veterans and service members are a diverse group of individuals, ranging in age, race/ethnicity, gender, and backgrounds.  Please join UMW Green Zone volunteers in the Magnolia Room of the University Center on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from noon to 1:30 p.m. for an open discussion on working with student veterans and service members and assisting them with the transition to student life.  At 12:45, we will turn the discussion over to a panel of student veterans for their perspective on transitioning from the military to a college campus.

As of this past spring, Virginia ranked fourth in states with the most active duty and reserve members of the military. It’s imperative that UMW staff and faculty educate themselves about working with student veterans and service members.

Giving Highlights

Every day, UMW alumni, parents, and friends show their support to the University in numerous ways. One way is through gifts to support students, programs, and special projects at Mary Washington. In the past weeks, University Advancement has accepted and processed gifts and pledges, including:

  • A $25,000 gift from a dedicated couple in the community to support Friends of the Philharmonic.
  • A $3,000 gift to the Fund for Mary Washington from an alumna of the Class of 1997.
  • A $25,000 pledge from parents of a 2016 alumnus to support the College of Business.
  • Two gifts totaling $2,000 for the James Monroe Museum – $1,000 from a couple in Richmond and $1,000 from a donor trust in Fredericksburg.
  • A $10,000 gift for the Belmont Building Preservation Fund from a Richmond-based foundation.
  • A $7,500 gift from an alumna of the Class of 1966 to enhance an endowed scholarship.

Hot Spot Restaurants Coming Next Week

Campus Dining is launching Hot Spot pop-up lunch restaurants at the Eagle’s Nest beginning the week of Jan. 30.  The menus will change each week and feature some of the most requested grilled and fried entrees.

The menus will not usually be announced ahead of time, but we’re giving you a sneak peek for our opening week. We’ll be offering “Bodacious Burgers,” steak fries, onions rings and other all-American favorites!  Service times will always be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but  you’ll need to like UMWDining on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or MyDtxt,  check our Top of the UC menu boards, or watch for our yard signs to know what day the Hot Spot will be open.  Keep your eyes open for this great new concept!
