The Power of Logos
Swooshes. Mouse ears. Golden arches.
From just those mentions, certain logos come to mind – right? Some famous companies’ logos carry so much value and recognition that they don’t even have to spell out their names. On the surface, logos may seem like simple art work, but there is MUCH more behind logos than meets the eye.
Let’s look at our own logo for the University of Mary Washington, in existence for little more than a decade. Those iconic columns, teamed with our distinctive tag line, represent our reputation, and the logo’s constant and consistent use – on t-shirts, in publications, within emails, on the web, etc. –broadens our visibility and boosts recognition of our institution.
We have a lot of logos at UMW. Some are recognized as official and are illustrated in our Brand Standards and Visual Identity Toolkit. Others are not. These tend to dilute our visibility and reputation. The University of Mary Washington Committee on Visual Identity Standards has been has been tasked with reviewing these “non-official” logos as part of its ongoing charge to help enforce our graphic standards and enhance the institution’s name recognition.
The committee will be reviewing logos of various entities, organizations, and departments throughout our campuses and will evaluate logos according to guidelines set forth in the Brand Standards.
If you have questions about the process or a logo you are currently using, please contact committee chair AJ Newell at anewell@umw.edu.
Help Raise 25,000 Pounds of Food to “STOP Hunger”
The University of Mary Washington Staff Advisory Council is joining forces with Campus Dining, UMW Athletes, and the UMW Bookstore in supporting Sodexo’s annual “STOP Hunger” food drive. Between November 6 and November 13, all donations made to the “One Can Hope” food drive will be added to the “STOP Hunger” drive in hopes of collecting 25,000 pounds of food to benefit the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.
The “STOP Hunger” food drive will launch on Friday, Nov. 6 with a curb-side food collection from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on College Avenue in front of Seacobeck Hall. Radio 99.3 “The Vibe” will be broadcasting live during the event. Everyone dropping off food donations on Friday will be entered in a drawing to win free concert tickets, courtesy of “The Vibe.” Canned goods will also be available on site, which you can purchase and donate to the drive. The food bank has recently expressed concerns that they may not have enough turkeys for area families this Thanksgiving, so we will gladly accept monetary donations that will help purchase more turkeys.
Donation bins for canned goods are located in all dining facilties, the UMW Bookstore, and many other campus buildings. A Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank van will be located in Ball Circle from November 9-13, and donations may also be dropped off there. For more details and additional donation locations please visit UMWDining.com or e-mail Heather Hosey, Campus Dining Marketing Assistant, at Heather.Hosey@Sodexo.com.
