Doug Gately performed with the National Symphony Orchestra on the PBS July 4th Concert, “A Capital Fourth.” The concert was televised live from the U.S. Capitol. Guest artists with the orchestra included Alfonso Ribeiro, Fantasia, Smokey Robinson, Loren Allred, Fitz & Noelle, Sheila E, Chloe Flower, Darren Criss and Sister Sledge.
Gately Hits High Notes in May With NSO and ‘Music in the Parks’
Department of Music Senior Lecturer Doug Gately performed with the National Symphony Orchestra at the televised U.S. Capital Memorial Day Concert, hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise on May 26. Guest artists and celebrities with the orchestra included Bryan Cranston, Jena Malone, Mary McCormack, Cynthia Erivo, Pitino Miller, Ruthie Ann Miles, Gary Le Vox, and BD Wong.
Gately also adjudicated performances throughout the month of May for Music In The Parks and Kings Dominion. This educational opportunity offers high school and middle school bands and orchestras a chance to perform. Groups throughout the Northeast and Southcentral United States come for assessment and compete for awards. They cap off their experience with a fun-filled day at the park.
Gately Performs with National Symphony Orchestra
Doug Gately, senior lecturer in the Department of Music, performed with the National Symphony Orchestra’s televised Capital Fourth Concert on July 5. The NSO was conducted by Jack Everly and hosted by country singer Mickey Guyton. This year’s concert included performances by Yolanda Adams, Gloria Gaynor, Keb’ Mo’, Darren Criss, Jake Owen, Cynthia Erivo and Andy Grammer, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra.
Gately Performs in ‘Nunsense’ at Riverside Center
Department of Music Senior Lecturer Doug Gately performed in the musical Nunsense starring Sally Struthers, June 3 to 12, at Riverside Center for the Performing Arts in Stafford, Virginia. Alto sax, clarinet and flute were the required instruments.
As an artist/clinician, Gately also adjudicated and rated band performances for Music in the Parks/Busch Gardens on June 3 and for Kings Dominion on May 13, 14 and 20. During this spring semester, Doug was also selected to adjudicate bands on Feb. 26 at the George Mason Jazz Festival, along with Jim Carroll in Jazz Studies at George Mason and Shenandoah University Director of Jazz Studies Matthew Niess.

Department of Music faculty member Doug Gately was recently a featured guest soloist with the James Monroe High School Jazz Band performance held May 21 at James Monroe High School. The UMW Department of Music is committed to its community outreach program, supporting the Arts and Education in our community.

Doug Gately will perform with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jack Everly. The National Memorial Day Concert returns live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on May 26 for a special televised 30th anniversary broadcast, hosted by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna and Tony-nominated actress Mary McCormack.
The all-star line-up also features: distinguished American leader General Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); Academy Award-nominated actor Sam Elliott; Grammy Award-winning legend Patti LaBelle; multi-platinum selling singer, performer and songwriter Gavin DeGraw; acclaimed actor Dennis Haysbert; Broadway and television star Christopher Jackson (Hamilton, Bull); multi-Grammy Award-winning bluegrass icon Alison Krauss; SAG and Olivier Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated actress and singer Amber Riley (Glee, Dreamgirls); platinum-selling country music star Justin Moore; television star Jaina Lee Ortiz; and Patrick Lundy & The Ministers of Music. American Idol Season 17 finalist Alyssa Raghu will open the show with a special performance of the national anthem.

He is also performing with NSO for the Bernstein at 100, A Celebration concert, July 27 at Wolftrap.

Doug Gately, director of the UMW Jazz Ensemble, was highlighted in the May issue of “SBO” (School, Band, & Orchestra) magazine for his educational work as an adjudicator and clinician at the 2018 Festivals of Music, Virginia Beach. The event was held April 27 and 28 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center at Norfolk State University. Gately Performs with the NSO & Ledisi at Kennedy Center
Doug Gately performed with the NSO and American R&B and jazz recording artist Ledisi at two performances at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Feb. 24 and 25. Both concerts were sold out.
Ledisi has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and is a mainstay on Billboard‘s R&B charts. Also on the concert was the legendary pianist and composer Patrice Rushen.
