2023 Fiske Guide to Colleges Recognizes UMW

The University of Mary Washington has once again been recognized in the annual Fiske Guide to Colleges, one of the leading guides for nearly 40 years. The 2023 edition features more than 300 of the “best and most interesting” public and private four-year colleges and universities in the nation as well as Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. “Tradition is at the heart of UMW and is one of the many things that instills a sense of community here,” says a junior quoted in the publication.

“Students are self-motivated by the excitement of learning something new,” comments another student.

Citing Mary Washington’s reputation as one of the premier public liberal arts and sciences colleges in the country, the Fiske Guide highlights the innovative core curriculum, including the “Beyond the Classroom” component and “After UMW” initiative, focused on professional and career development. The University’s Honor Code and First-Year Seminar (FSEM) earn additional praise, and the guide notes how the “close ties between students and faculty are a great source of pride at Mary Washington.” Read more.

For the 14th consecutive year, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has named the University of Mary Washington among the country’s best for delivering outstanding academics and reasonable prices.

UMW makes Fiske Guide to Colleges 2022Among top-selling publications that compare colleges, the prestigious Fiske Guide is often considered the gold standard resource. The 2022 edition, the 38th annual issue, features more than 300 of the “best and most interesting” public and private four-year colleges and universities in the nation as well as Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. Listings are based on questionnaires completed by administrators and a cross-section of students.

Along with strong academics, championship athletics and successful graduates, this year’s edition mentions Mary Washington’s beautiful campus, rich history and unique traditions like Eagle Gathering, Devil Goat Day and Junior Ring Week. The publication points to incoming students’ pledge to uphold the honor code, along with other shared experiences like a first-year seminar, common read and living-learning communities.

For the 10th consecutive year, The Fiske Guide to Colleges has named University of Mary Washington among the country’s best colleges for delivering outstanding academics and reasonable prices.

Among top-selling publications that compare colleges, the prestigious Fiske Guide is often considered the gold standard resource. The 2020 edition, the 36th annual issue, features more than 300 of the “best and most interesting” public and private colleges and universities in the nation, as well as Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. Listings are based on questionnaires completed by administrators and a cross-section of students.

Along with strong academics, championship athletics and successful graduates, this year’s edition mentions Mary Washington’s rich history, unique traditions like Devil Goat Day and Junior Ring Week, and of course, its beauty: “The campus features classical Jeffersonian buildings, sweeping lawns, brick walkways and breathtaking foliage.”

“We long have known that University of Mary Washington offers a tremendous return on investment, and we’re glad the rest of the world is recognizing the value of the educational experience here,” said UMW President Richard V. Fiske College Guide Names UMW a “Best Buy”

For the second year in a row, the University of Mary Washington is the only institution in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia to be named as a “best buy” in the prestigious Fiske Guide to Colleges. Fiske announced that UMW is among 24 public and 25 private schools singled out as “best buys” in the 2012 edition of the guide.

The listing, which examined institutions that offer the best education and most reasonable prices, was based on questionnaires sent to administrators and a cross-section of students.
