Larry Atkins Award Nominations Due

September 11th is the final day to nominate one of your deserving colleagues for the Larry Atkins award. The S.A.C. gives an award annually for each of the employee categories, Administrative faculty, Classified and Wage.

Please don’t let it go by, as there are so many that do so much and we need to acknowledge their efforts.  This award has a nickname as “The We Couldn’t Do it Without You Award.” Please think seriously about nominating your deserving employess.  Awardees will be notified and awarded at the October Employee gathering.

Back to School Donations

If you missed the tax free weekend, sorry.  But, please consider donating some items for the Back to School drive.  Helpful items are paper packs (wide-ruled), coloring pencils, crayons, tissues, pens and pencils,  and composition books.  All donated items are bing used in Stafford county this year through a program sponsored by Apple Federal Systems and Stafford County Schools.  Thank you for your support!  Please see a SAC member to place your donations.

This weekend, August 7-9, is Virginia tax-free back to school weekend.  Please take advantage of this and pick up a few extra items to be placed in our collection boxes for the back-to-school drive.

Staff Advisory Council Mixer Today at 4:30 p.m.

All Faculty and Staff,

You are invited to come and network, kibitz or otherwise hobnob with other faculty and staff at Home Team Grill in Eagle Village.  Your Staff Advisory Council is hosting this mixer as we end our orientation swing and hope you will come by and visit!  This mixer will be from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. with happy hour pricing until 6 p.m. on drinks and some appetizers. C’mon out and relax and enjoy the atmosphere that is Home Team Grill. It will be a great day to be an EAGLE!

Plan to take a few minutes and visit with fellow staff and faculty with happy hour prices until 6 p.m. for drinks and some appetizers.

S.A.C. will host a faculty and staff mixer on Thursday, May 14 from 4-6 p.m. at the Underground. Come let your hair down and relax after another successful academic year at UMW.  Light snacks will be available as well as a cash bar with beer, wine, soda and water.

Several UMW staff attended the annual MABUG conference from Sunday, Sept. 27 to Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Richmond, Virginia. The Mid-Atlantic Banner Users Group (MABUG) is an association of colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee and West Virginia that uses Banner as its student information system. The conference creates an engagement opportunity to discuss the latest Ellucian products, platforms, tools and offerings to support teaching, learning and business operations. It also provides an opportunity to meet with peers, discuss similar business challenges and glean best-practice advice. At this year’s conference, UMW presented a total of eight sessions, the most of any other college or university in attendance. The presentations represented an array of areas at the institution:

UMW Staff Present at MABUG Conference

UMW Enterprise Applications Services (EAS) and UMW advancement staff attended and presented at the annual MABUG meeting in Virginia Beach hosted by Old Dominion University. The Mid-Atlantic Banner Users Group (MABUG) is an association of colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Of the 10 attendees from UMW, seven made presentations during the conference. Sessions included: Oracle Security on a Shoestring with Jim Rawlings, Data Base Administrator; Single Sign-on Manager for Banner with Jill Ellington, Applications Developer and Jim Rawlings, Data Base Administrator; Banner Security Life Cycle with John Symonds, Applications Data Base Administrator; Setting up Banner Mobile Applications with Shannon Swanson, IT Analyst/Developer, and The Best of:  Advancement’s Reporting Services, Ben Kjar, Associate Director, Linda Lovin, SQL Server Data Base Administrator, and Jane Cariker, Director of Advancement IT Services. Also attending were: Linda Thornton, Associate Director, Business Process Analysis; Tom Cummings, Sr. Systems Analyst; and April Peterson, Applications Developer.

The topics encompassed all of the functional areas within a university using Banner.  There were a total of 84 presentations given across the spectrum from admissions to technical.  In attendance were 395 participants, representing 55 participating institutions, and 27 major vendors.

Participants remarked on the relevancy and the quality of UMW presentations. Conference organizers noted that UMW was third among all 55 attending organizations in number of presentations, preceded by Ellucian (Banner software vendor) and ODU (the host institution).
