Academic and Career Services Introduces Faculty Fellows

Academic and Career Services is proud to introduce a new initiative for this academic year – the Faculty Fellows Program which is an active collaboration between the Office of Academic and Career Services and members of the teaching faculty. Fellows will work in one of the two primary student service areas represented by the office, providing focused leadership in key areas of need. The fellows for 2014-2015 and their areas of specialization are:

• Dawn Bowen, Professor of Geography: Dawn will focus on academic advising and the development of a peer advising program which builds on UMW’s success in the area of peer consultants such as in the Writing and Speaking Centers.

• John Broome, Assistant Professor of Education: John will focus on academic advising and provide critical guidance as we examine and enhance our program of academic success workshops.

• Carole Garmon, Professor of Art: Carole will focus on academic advising, particularly with undeclared and undecided students.

• Kim Kinsley, Senior Lecturer in Business Law: Kim will focus on career advising and will work to advance mentoring efforts designed to connect our alumni and students.

• Jeremy Larochelle, Associate Professor of Spanish: Jeremy will concentrate on academic advising and will lead up initiatives to work with students on probation and suspension.

• Venitta McCall, Professor of Education: Venitta will focus on academic advising, particularly with undeclared and undecided students.

• Chad Murphy, Assistant Professor of Political Science: Chad will focus on career advising and will offer focused leadership to our internship program.

• Deborah O’Dell, Associate Professor of Biology: Deb will focus on career advising and will work to forge linkages and initiatives with UMW’s faculty career advisors in academic programs.

• Debra Steckler, Associate Professor of Psychology: Debra will focus on academic advising with a special emphasis on transfer students.

This is an incredibly strong team who already have infused the Office of Academic and Career Services with energy and enthusiasm. We are grateful for their service and look forward with anticipation to all that we can accomplish together for the benefit of our students.
