Surupa Gupta, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, co-authored (along with Dr. Sumit Ganguly of Indiana University) an op-ed titled “Modi Bets the Farm” on India’s latest dispute with the World Trade Organization. In July, India refused to sign the accession protocol on a recent agreement that attempts to simplify customs rules. This is the first such multilateral agreement adopted by the WTO membership since the institution’s inception in 1995. Although this has generated hostility towards India from various quarters, we argue that compelling domestic and international factors shaped India’s decision to withhold its signature.

She provided the opening remarks and Amb. H.H.S Viswanathan, Distinguished Fellow, ORF, was the discussant. Vivan Sharan of ORF’s Global Governance Initiative moderated the discussion.
Surupa Gupta Added to ICTSD Trade Expert Network
Surupa Gupta, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, has been added to the network of experts for the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD). Based in Geneva, ICTSD is an independent non-profit and non-governmental organisation that seeks to empower stakeholders in trade policy through information, networking, dialogue, well-targeted research and capacity-building. Its goal is to further the cause of sustainable development. It maintains consultative status with most international organizations and other civil society networks.
Gupta Presents on India and the Liberal World Order

Surupa Gupta, assistant professor of political science and international affairs, presented her research on Indian foreign economic policy at a conference on “IBSA: Experience and Perspectives on South-South Cooperation” organized by the Center for Study of International Negotiations at the University of Sao Paulo on May 17, 2013. She also made a presentation at the BRICS Policy Center in Rio de Janeiro on May 20, 2013.
